I've been a public school teacher for 28 years and today was the first day of my new career as a distance learning instructor. It started off as badly as I thought it would but got way better much faster than I had anticipated. However, it's rather strange being alone in a classroom and teaching a bunch of empty chairs.

So a cashier at the grocery store can see hundreds of different people a day but teachers can’t have the same students in there class? What kind of BS is this?

We are looking at taking the kids out of the public school system and starting home schooling. Talking to other parents it’s looking like a common theme. Could be the beginning of the end of public schools if they don’t get their heads out of their asses!

When you look at it, distance learning is kind of like homeschooling. But I hear ya. If your school system is doing distance learning at least give it a try. I'm new at this but have a lot of experience so I think I can make it work. Granted, I'm better face to face but this is the hand we've been dealt.

I'm not sure how Cali is handling this. I know LA is doing distance learning. NY reopened schools but left it up to individual districts on how they wanted to handle it. I know here in Vegas if you're a charter school or private school you make your own rules and can reopen face to face.

Funny how teachers will strike for increased pay and better bennie's, but won't strike to actually teach kids in their classrooms.

Their selfish ways are clearly evident now.

Teachers in my district are not allowed to strike per our contract. Striking means instant termination. But I understand your point. Teachers in Florida were ordered back to work but fought it tooth and nail and I think they won.

Teachers in California wouldn't return unless police were defunded and a whole bunch of other political trash.

The teachers in AZ left the kids out to dry while they were on strike for more pay while bringing up the rear in nationwide results. Most teachers are dullards and rather that collectively kneeling to them we need to start holding them to higher standards.

My GF said her kids’ school in NM is an absolute joke.

Tablet doesn’t have the needed apps. Can’t download anything because it’s protected.

Asked her to send the serial number so they could see which tablet they gave her. So what...the schools isn’t even tracking who got issued what tablet?

Started a week late...still don’t even have a full days schedule. Don’t know what they are doing from one day to the next.

It's been a stressful few days thus far. That being said, my three school-age children have fairly well-defined goals, and the teachers are working hard to make sure the content is structured and available. My fourth grader's teachers also have a standing meeting in place for students that have question or need help with something. You need a little help with some concept, you go to the online meeting. If you're good, you don't go.

Weird? Yes. Different? Yes. But it's going to be okay. Right now, they're all kind of excited to be able to work at their own pace. When the day's work is done, they're done. That attitude may change as we get further along, but I'm optimistic right now.

I feel quite certain that most teachers would much rather do face-to-face instruction. But that's not the hand we were dealt, at least for this first 9-week grading period. In my opinion, my kids' teachers - and the local school system - have done an outstanding job in this weird situation. They certainly have my respect for how they've handled everything.

My wife is a 3rd grade teacher. She has been going full bore since Aug 1 trying to get ready, right now they will have kids in classroom, but some kids will be remote learning because parents do not want them in classroom. No guidance on what happens if any covid cases happen. Specialist time, lunch and playground all totally disrupted. Basically a race to teach kids how to use their laptop because when the covid cases happen they will most likely go to distance learning for all. Wife is stressed out trying to prepare for all the ways she might have to teach kids. Since she has her masters in special ed and they can't break kids out for specialist, her class is 50% learning disability of one sort or another and she will not have any teacher aids, grandma helpers or parent helpers this year.

But the grocery store has that piece of plexiglass to protect you from the person who just handled all the stuff you're taking home.

Teacher's unions are going to mess around and get a full on school choice voucher system pushed through.

Public schools are not setup for distance learning, more than a few parents selecting companies that are. Since schools are reimbursed per pupil by the feds, there will be consequences. Local district already a million in the hole with all the extra stuff they are doing. So, staff cuts and asking for more property tax coming down the pike for sure.

What's open / closed in N.J. is @ the Governor's whim, which isn't based on any " rational " reasoning.
I expect some sort of " miracle " on or about " 4 Nov. ",..........& not just in N.J. !!

Where I live a few of the neighbors have rented out a club house and have hired a retired teacher.
