Tornadoes... I can remember back in the day charging the camcorder in the am there was a medium or high risk (only 3 levels back then, not 5) and no matter how hard you tried to get close they always run away, unless its nighttime then they came knocking.

Lightning, you can take steps to mitigate it, but otherwise it will kill you.
Out on the lake during the summer on Cheney while sailing when younger and some cumulous start popping to the west always meant it was probably time to bring her in to port. Middle of a lake in a Kansas thunderstorm next to a lightning rod and tallest thing for 5-7 miles round seemed like a rather silly situation to be in.

The correct answer for them was to be in the clubhouse having drinks or if they could not make it, out on the fairway away from trees hunched over with their hands on their ancles and feet next to each other with the head down there too, the idea is to mitigate the amount of surface area you create sticking up as well as contacting with the ground to mitigate the odds for a strike to create a ground through you. That's why you don't just lay down.

Closest I've been to a lightning strike was probably 50ft at the edge of the parking lot of our shop. It was so loud and bright and I just caught where the bolt struck out of the corner of my eye.

Our youngest was caught outside a couple of blocks from home when a thunderstorm rolled in. He and a friend were walking down the street headed to the house when lightning hit a tree about 30' away from them. Knocked both of them off their feet and part of the tree exploded all around them. It took his friend a couple of minutes to recover enough to get up as far as he could recall - he may have been out for some time as well. Checked him out at the ER and all was well.

We called him "sparky" for a couple of months afterwards. To this day though he said thunderstorms still make him nervous.

Come on down here in the summer.
Down there the strikes are so random. like the road surface itself 50ft ahead of you even though there are lampposts down both sides of the causway that should have been the most likely targets. It's like you guys on the Gulf side get so many strikes that it gets bored hitting just the tallest things around.

Yeah, it gets wild. It can be clear out, and it'll strike something in the area. It gets so dark when the afternoon T-Storms roll in, the street lights turn on, and you need to turn lights on in the house. The lightning strikes in the counter can top 600 in one of those storms.

Wow! One tough dude on the floor. Takes about a dozen and a half, goes down. First thing he does when the shooter leaves is check to see if he got hit in the weiner. When that works out for him he pulls his wallet out and drags himself towards the order counter to pay for his food.

Nice effort.
