It's on like Donkey Kong!

Camaro chief claims ZL1 will outperform Shelby GT500

"It would seem on paper that the 2013 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 should easily slay the heavier and less powerful 2012 Chevy Camaro ZL1. The former weighs 3,850 pounds and brings 650 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque to the table, the latter carries 4,120 pounds and 580 hp/556 lb-ft.

"We've done simulations. We predict that the ZL1 will be quicker to 60 than the [2013] GT500."

Not so fast, says Camaro Chief Engineer Al Oppenheiser (above). Speaking with Autoblog at an Arizona drive event for the Camaro ZL1, Oppenheiser told us, "We've done simulations. We predict that the ZL1 will be quicker to 60 than the [2013] GT500... We ran the Nürburgring and released a time. Ford took the GT500, too, and never released a time. I guess you can draw your own conclusions."

When asked point-blank if he thought the ZL1 would be quicker around the 'Ring, Oppenheiser replied, "No question."

Them sounds like fighting words, especially in the face of data that suggests the opposite is true. Remember, this is the same guy who told Mustang fans "you're welcome" for encouraging Ford to throw everything it can at the Camaro.

But we're not counting Oppenheiser among the crazy just yet. All that power generated by the GT500's supercharged 5.8-liter V8 will be for naught if it can't reach the ground without turning into tire vapor, and let's not forget that the Blue Oval's bomber is still dragging around a solid rear axle, compared to the all-independent suspension sporting third-generation Magnetic Ride shocks on the ZL1. And who's doing the driving can always be the great equalizer when talking 'Ring times.

We're still inclined to put our chips on the blue square, but nothing's certain until these two titans of Detroit meet head-to-head. "

No sense in all this speculation, simulations, claims, etc. Waste of time. Just wait till the cars are released to the public and someone can get them together FFS.

You're everyday muscle car fan cars more about straight line performance, while the twisty stuff is nice, it's not what's selling that type of car right now.

I can only imagine how nasty the GT500 is going to break it off in the ZL1 @ 60+ MPH.

Mulletmobile. Faster to 60. Faster around the Ring. We shall see.

I'll still take the Ford.

I'd be to embarrassed to be spotted driving the Camaro. Even it is faster. NOT.

How did he simulate Ford's launch control in their "tests"? I mean, we all understand how launch control works, but you can't really say you know how one particular car is going to react to it. SVT seems to be pretty confident in it's abilities. On top of that, can't the new GT500 hit 60 in 1st? Can the ZL1 do that because that's a big deal if you're claiming you'll win to 60.

Actually, with that high geared rear on the GT500 he COULD be right.....to 60. But who the hell races to 60MPH?

Notice how they are just saying faster to 60... What? 5.1 vs 5.2? How about that quarter mile?

Our car beat your car in simulations? Are you effing kidding me? And I thought bench racing here was bad:rollseyes..... I think he should just STFU until he can PROVE his claims. And the ring- sure they ran a great time, after a rolling start:nonono: Looks like Chevy is up to its old tricks again, remember the ad saying- "we paid the loan off, WITH interest!".... Yeah- with another govt loan:bash: lol. I think this will be another example of where their claim falls short of reality:lol:

I honestly think the guy is just butt hurt, and trying to make himself, and potential ZL1 owners feel better about their car.

If he was honest with himself or smart he would know that Ford knew they were going to try and put a hurting on the GT500 with the ZL1, and that Ford would increase the GT500's all around performance. He probably did expect Ford to up the gT500 performance, but just not to the extent they did.

Like someone else mentioned, this guy from Chevy said nothing about the quarter-mile. Guess his simulations didn't work out in his favor on that one.
