My son spent a month in Thessaloniki playing soccer when he was 16.

Hot! Dinner was at 10PM and went to bed around 3AM. Up at 5AM to work. Everyone slept in the afternoon, siesta style, due to the heat. AC was a rare luxury. He had a blast. He was offered a position on a semi-pro team, to be trained for the pro Euro leagues but couldn't bring himself to commit to moving away.

We specifically aimed for early summer to avoid the brutal heat and rain.

All the hotels we picked actually advertise “in room AC individually controlled” lol.

Well off we go.

14 day trip.

Airfare was 3800 round trip for two. Upgraded to economy plus for $1200 for extra leg room and seats that recline more so was at 5k.

Then my buddy says he was miserable on the trans Atlantic flight to Japan to visit his daughter.

**** it.

$7300 in airfare and we’re in Polaris Business class (trans Atlantic doesn’t have what they call 1st class anymore). We have our own cubby with the bed that lies totally flat. Windows auto tint for desired shade. Pretty ridiculous but after an 18hr travel day that started at 7am MST, we’ll arrive the next day in Greece at 10am. Figured the sleep would help.

We are not the same. Im already out.

Looking forward to seeing some cool pics of stuff I’ll never see in person.
Same. Our upcoming vacation isn't going to cost half of what the plane tickets are. Sucks being poor.

I've seen the Parthenon that's in Tennessee but it'd be amazing to see the real one. Be safe man.

Well someone mentioned that downtown Athens is like any other big city.

Lots of graffiti.

As with most foreign countries I’ve visited, their driving style is different. Mopeds blasting through city traffic. One just plowed into a taxi and ripped the fairings off the bike. Driver and rider just shrugged at each other and parted ways lol.

Uber works here, but it’s only Taxi that is available through the app. Lyft does not. Think this was some sort of unionized car service deal.

Athens INTL was a breeze to get through.

Don’t ever buy anything at the airport or exchange money there. Rates and prices are like +25%. I suspected that, read about it, and it’s true.

Gonna wander around and explore later. Coffee is potent here so that helps but by the time we got to the hotel, we’d been awake 24hrs minus the 3hrs of sleep I got on the plane. GF is a ****ing koala and prob slept 8 of 18hrs flight time.

So far so good and lots of cool sights to take in.

. Being able to rest on the way since it’s like switching to a night shift was a game changer.

What airline are you flying with?

Flying United. They are partners with Aegean in Greece.

We searched flights on Google flights and the United one fit our location and schedule just right. They aren’t my favorite airline but this went off without a hitch.

It was United the whole way out. Return will be Aegean from Athens to Frankfurt. App says Aegean operated by United from Frankfurt to Denver.

Couldn’t pick seats for the Aegean leg on the United app or the Aegean app. Called Aegean at the Athens airport and really quickly talked to a human and got seats in the 8th row as our layover before the transatlantic flight is only an hour.

All of this has been surprisingly easy. Hotels helped arrange shuttles and rental cars for me.

Ferry reservations made online and stored on an app.

Only hiccup was that I don’t have international calling on my cell and even after paying extra for it, it wouldn’t work. Arranged all the rental cars and got questions answered via email pretty easily.

I paid for international data with Maya Mobile. They send an Esim. Super easy. $24 for 10 gigs and I’m my GF is just using my hotspot on that data plan.

Ride the ferry to Santorini this AM.

We lost about 30min during the 4.5hr trip due to rough seas. Stopped at five islands to drop off/pick up passengers.

Hotel arranged a shuttle to meet us at the ferry port on arrival.

Mercedes party bus but super nice.

Arrived at the hotel and holy crap. The service everywhere had been great but I’m just not used to what we’re getting here.

Escorted to the lobby while a fellow in a golf cart took the luggage to our room.

Rental car delivered to the hotel for us.

Then they informed us that we got upgraded to a suite with a family room and a private pool.

Little chilly with the breeze @65* but the pool is heated.

Something has to go wrong as some point…..

Wrapped up five days on Santorini.

Overall a great experience. Best part for me is just seeing the countryside and all the views. I grew up by the ocean so this is great.

Santorini is def geared up for tourism. Two full size cruise ships came and went every other day. Tour busses and guided tours everywhere.

None of that is for me though. I wasn’t sure we’d use our rental car all that much but it was a game changer.

Average car here is a 1200cc manual 4dr compact. Lot of roads here where you have to pull to the shoulder to pass oncoming traffic. Neat feature is they have a built in automatic line lock. Come to a stop and the brakes hold for @2.5 seconds or as soon as you attempt to move forward. If you aren’t good with a manual, you’d be ****ed or have to pay extra for an automatic. Very steep hills with stops all over.

View from dinner spot in Fira. I’m no food snob by any means, but the food here is unreal. Even a sandwich at what a normal little shop here is excellent.

IMG_0461.JPG

Lamb is on every menu. Lobster linguine is popular too.

Lunch at Amoudi Bay. Nothing seems commercialized like in the US. There were only three establishments with maybe 15 tables a piece here. The waiter took us in the back to see the fresh fish and lobster. Def paying for some of that service in the food price though. But you could go on the cheap and just have some drinks if you wanted. Haven’t been rushed anywhere. I’m always expecting them to rush over with the bill but I realized after sitting there for 1/2 an hour after we finished, they weren’t going to bring the tab until we asked.

“Sand” at Parisa Beach. Whole island is lava rock. Wild colors everywhere. I’m not a huge picture taker so I didn’t capture a lot of it.

Beaches have beds and cabana set up everywhere. Range from free if you order drinks to $250 E with a bottle of wine, sushi, prawns, and fresh fruit. Cabana we rented was a king size mattress size plus this bean bag deal.

Haven’t googled what the specs are on this thing.

This looks like a blast.

It makes me wonder how much these areas are struggling for money, we were in England a few weeks ago and the service was significantly better than years prior, and the restaurants were empty. I don't think people are spending any dough.
