I'm curious if anyone on SVTP has ever completed a Citizens Police Academy program in their town or city.
I've always been interested in law enforcement. Wanted to be a police officer but never pursued that dream. So my daughter, who knows I've always wanted to be a cop, informed me yesterday that my town offers an annual special program to its citizens called the Citizens Police Academy. It's open to town citizens over the age of 18. Participants get an overview of various units within the police department and cover topics such as crime analysis, narcotics, special weapons and tactics (SWAT), crime interdiction unit, investigative services, traffic enforcement, community response unit, K-9 unit and crime scene processing. I also found out that many other towns and cities offer this program. It's 8 weeks long and participants meet once a week from 6:30-8:30.
It's such a big area of interest for me so I'm going to jump at this opportunity in the Spring of 2019. The program is limited to 20 people and each has a background check done. Its intent is to familiarize citizens with the work a police officer does, and to improve the relationship between police officers and citizens. So while I won't become a police officer, I'll get to know more about the work they do.
So has anyone here on SVTP ever gone through a Citizens Police Academy?
