Why would a mustang be trying to compete with a top tier corvette? The mustang chassis does not have the means of putting power down like the C7 chassis, just take it for what it is and let it be good at that.
The legend returns in 2019. The most powerful street-legal production Ford ever with more than 700hp projected.

If it doesn’t have 799.99hp, interbrats will be let down.
Let the power guessing games begin!
Finally a teaser from Ford.

Just my opinion, 700 implies 700-750, which I think it really needs to have more than the already announced ZR1.
Still hoping for 755+
Why shouldn't it? The 13-14 had more HP than any Vette.
And the ZR1 is soon to not be the top tier Vette, that will be the mid engine C8

Because the vette is not a straight line car... you try to put the same horsepower in a mustang and a corvette and set them both loose on the track, all the mustang is going to do is embarrass itself.
The C7 z06 lacked the serious aero needed for 650 HP, and you expect a mustang with 700+ to hang? Have you seen the aero on the C7 zr1, or ACR viper for that matter? These cars are not just "not on the same page," they aren't even reading the same book. Not to mention unless the GT500 got some sort of wide body, the corvette will have a MASSIVE tire advantage.
If the only thing that matters though is HP numbers and nothing else, sure, take that hollow victory...
The GT500 is the best straight line car Ford will have. It's the straight line car the non GT350 fans have been waiting for.
With less HP and more weight, it will lose at the drag strip to the "not a straight line" vette.
No Bueno.
If you want to claim it shouldn't need to lap a given track faster, I can buy into that. But at the drag strip, it should be capable of giving the top vette a race.

It never ceases to amaze me how so many of you are obsessed with "will the Mustang GT500R KR 7.0L FPC be faster than the HellDemon ZR6 with the 1LE package." Other than a handful of people on forums, no one cares about a tenth or two in the 1/4 mile or around a track. All these cars are fast as hell. Its about the looks and the driving experience. If you like both, by the car. If you don't, buy something else. Stop worrying about one of them being a tiny bit faster. I had the same concerns around the 5.0L and the Buick GN/IROC/TA/Vette back in the day. Then I grew up and realized it didn't matter.
Too late. Yesterday I found a 100% cherry 1967 427 Mustang. It's been sitting in the guys garage for 12 years. I'm working on buying that. Would much rather own the 67.
LOL, yeah I have been playing this fast car game a long time on the interwebs, but don't post much. Ask TobSomeone must have really prodded your prostrate to get you to post that.

Consider this, though. The '15 Z06 ran a 1:38.60 hot lap when Motor Trend had it in the 2015 BDC competition. I know people will say, "but that car wasn't making full power," but that's the particular point here. The much less powerful '16 GT350R laid down 1:36.11. That's 2.49 seconds faster. I think it's fairly safe to say that, even though the Z06 wasn't making full power on its run, it was probably still making in the neighborhood of GT350R power and is 100+ lbs lighter.
Now, you could reasonably argue to look at the Grand Sport, instead. That car ran 1:35.62 on its BDC hot lap. It's also +/-100 lbs lighter than a Z06 w/ Z07 package and over 200 lbs lighter than the GT350R. Some say the GS is actually a better balanced car because it's not overpowering its chassis and can make better use of the power available.
Anyway, I said all that to say this. Add plenty of power and appropriate suspension tweaks, and there's really no reason that the GT500 couldn't be in the ballpark of the ZR1, which weighs the same as the Z06. Also, we have yet to see performance numbers on the ZR1, and Chevy is on record saying the new ZR1 is basically a very track capable GT car, not a streetable track car. It's going to be bonkers on track, but not balls-to-the-wall crazy. And there might very well be an R/KR variant of the new GT500 still looming.
The GT500 is not going after a Vette.
It's going after the ZL1 1LE.
