I just ordered an MAF adapter to adapt it to a 4 inch filter. i have an S&B oiled filter to use. I bought the filter probably 10 years ago for a project that never came to be and its been sitting in my garage unused since. Is there any reason not to use the filter? has filter technology changed in the last 10 years?

Good call check it out and see. Maybe use the cleaner stuff and make sure it is ready to go. I clean my k&n every year to start the season.

I am not a fan of cotton/gauze type filters. They do not filter even as wel as a regular paper filter and the oil can get on the MAF and cause poor resolution.

I prefer a dry type filter like Amsoil EA. It filters less than 1 micron and you don't have to oil it.

One thing I noticed was the quality of the filter media and the thickness of the rubber. All very well made.

I don't think gauze type filter dry out......that material is pretty "dry" before it lands on the store shelves. I've never seen the media on a pleated gauze filter disintegrate. The rubber boot is where they give-up the ghost. You should be fine.

I'm with 04sleeper on this one. Gauze filters breathe so well because the media (barrier) is so thin and it's loaded with pin size holes (look thru one up to the light). Cotton fiber filters are the best to clean air but are restrictive because of it. My happy medium is a foam filter element. The open cell foam has all those chambers to catch the grit before it gets inside the engine. I use Bell-Ray form air filter oil which is the best filter oil on the planet bar none! This stuff is essentially an aggressive adhesive and you will want to be wearing rubber gloves when applying it. Most filter oil I've seen is nothing but just that, "oil" which the dirt clings too and doesn't "bond" with. When cleaning I filter the dirt and sand out of the solvent so I can get it progressively cleaner and amazed by how much grit it traps and how fine it is. It takes about 4 passes before I can’t see anymore grit getting filtered out of the solvent. I can't image a gauze filter being able to trap the volume of stuff a foam filter can. They are a good alternative most people don’t consider. Almost every off-road vehicle playing in the sand dunes runs one and for good reason.

Ha nice, that sure is a great looking filter. Here is a pic I took today before I put mine on, the one on the right is the filter I got w/ my JLT rai, it has only about 3k miles on it. And on the left, of course, is the Amsoil filter. Too bad it's gonna be covered up w/ a cf shield.
