Hi all. Long story short, mechanical failure driving my new to me 2003 F350 4x4 7.3L home has led to a failed diff carrier in the Dana 60 FRONT axle. I believe the ring and pinion are ok, but needs new bearings all around.

As its a chance to upgrade from an open diff, my budget can allow for a Dana Trak-Lok, Detroit Locker or TruTrac

Truck is a CCLB so it wont be rock crawling. But if Im in 4x4 offroad, I want as much traction as possible. Air lockers or an Ox locker are really cool, but too far out of my budget. 500-700 for the carrier, another 200 for bearing kit then install labor is what I have to work with.

Whats your pick and why?

Detroit Locker if the truck is primarily driven offroad.

Otherwise, get the Trutrac. I had them in the front and rear axles of my 05 Powerstroke on 37’s and they were perfect. I never knew they were there on the street and they always locked up exactly when needed. They worked flawlessly for 100k miles at the time I sold the truck.

Are you also planning on installing a locking diff in the rear?

Trutrac seems like the best option for mostly road driven vehicle.

Another open diff and lock the rear. That truck will never need a locker up front in almost any situation

Trutrac is basically a more aggressive version of a Torsen.

Lockers are great on dry roads, wet, not so much. Ask me how I know. Actually, don’t.

I never had an issue, just have to be able to throttle steer.

Depending where you like to go off-road, a posi-trac front can make a huge difference. I run a lot of loose dirt/rock trails and the front maintaining traction helps in a lot of sections.

An CCLB F350 will never be going offroad to the point you need a locker up front...

I'm guessing you've never run gas well / strip mine roads in the Appalachian Mountains. There's some great places to camp if you can get your rig there. I'm considering buying one of these for the task:

You'd be surprised where I've run.... He does not need a front locker lol.

4x4 conversion E series on an arctic glacier. Open front open rear.

And my Ranger has been in literally everything from snow/ice/sand/mud/rock still has an open front, locked rear and is pretty well unstoppable.

No issues sled pulling and drag racing my 08 F250 with Trutrac in both ends for years at 800+whp so far. Always solid traction and predictable rear behavior.

Absolutely needed, no. But very helpful in certain situations. There's certainly dumber ways to spend your money.

I have Torsen differentials in the front and rear of my 01' F250 V10 Super Duty. I have a 600" long driveway that I plow. I have 315/70/16 DuraTrac tires. (35" tall). This truck will go anywhere. I have never come close to getting stuck, and yes I have slid off of the road while plowing (going in reverse in a huge snowstorm and could not see my tracks). I walked right out of that ditch with no issues in 16" of snow.
