CARFAX will give you a little history of the car...

Personally, I'd look for leaks and weird sounds. Make sure everything is smooth on test drive. If you really want to get anal, get it on a lift and inspect.

Once you test drive it, and theres nothing obvs wrong with it, take it to Ford and get a full inspection done.

Compression check is number one. Low compression in one cylinder = move on to next terminator.
