Love them, my uncle flew UH1’s in the Army, Vietnam and flew for PHI after the war.. he used to take me and my dad (also a Vietnam vet) up in the Bell’s that PHI flew.. had a lot of fun. I was f’ng hooked… this was in the 80s/90s.

Lol I remember one time my uncle took his father in law up and did an auto rotation.. my dad and I knew what was coming, that poor fella didn’t :ROFLMAO:

You'll probably know what I'm talking about, but when we flew with the 160th while working with Marsoc there was an instance where I was the one sitting on the side of the UH-60 with my legs hanging off the side and we were doing various operations for training, but I remember the pilot going into a deep dive and rotation where we felt like we were point right at the ground. We were in a partially wooded area of Ft Lewis that had openings with fields, but at this time we were over the woods and he was diving hard and fast. I leaned back as the G's were pulling my back to the floor of the helicopter yet I looked down at my feet and I was staring at the ground because we were banked so hard going around in a circle. I felt like I was getting pulled out of the opposite side of the Blackhawk which would have been upwards yet I was basically standing up and staring at the ground. Felt like tye Gravitron ride at the fair, and as we got lower he pulled up and we landed on the ground smoothly like that crazy ride hadn't happened. It was unforgettable.

I want to say @FLYIN told a story probably a decade ago about that corkscrew method being performed in Afghanistan and he got a bronze star or some reward from it. I'm probably mixing stories up but I know all of it is true in some way or another, it might just be two different stories.

Helicopters are weird machines that work on dark magic and the blood of the innocent. My legs get shaky when I'm on the glass elevators at the Embassy Suites, so there's no way i think I could ride in a helicopter. I'll stick with airplanes and fly the way God intended. Lol

Do you for how long and what unit?
Not sure what unit, I could ask him. He flew in Panama, chasing Noriega around. Flew in Kosovo, Bosnia.
He said the first time he was shot at, he couldn't figure out what that "popcorn" sound was. Then it made sense why they sit on their flak jackets.

A helicopter is basically all hand flying, you guys don’t do much of that anymore on the commercial jets… save for take-offs and landings.
I proved myself back when I was teaching Chinese communists to fly single-engine approaches in actual IMC with steam gauges and no autopilot building my time to get a good job and fly the fancy stuff.
There's no glory in maintaining 37,000 and Mach .76 for 4 hours by hand. I let the autopilot and auto throttles do the boring part. Lol

I will say, I've flown with a lot of helicopter pilots who have graduated to flying airplanes and they have some wild stories and pictures from their adventures. I had one FO who was an Afghani helicopter pilot flying those big ugly Soviet helicopters. The stuff he showed me was insane.
We actually had a new hire whose training got delayed thanks to the covid panic. He was still flying Blackhawks with the guard and crashed in the mountains just north east of the BOI. Another Blackhawk guy was explaining how crazy it is to do NVG flying at night. Apparently, it's almost impossible to tell you're flying in to weather until you're already in it.

I pretty much did my whole enlistment attached to helicopters and they are sketchy as hell, but still fun. The worst ride I ever took however was still a 7 ton coming down from range 600 in Camp Pendleton as we almost drove off a cliff while sitting in the back unprotected apparently. It was also a cliff that other trucks had driven off of in the past.

At 29 Palms we were on 53s heading out to a range to perform an attack and the machine gunners were behind us when the stabilizers went out. They landed for a moment and they all rushed out believing they were safe until they were told to get back on and continue. I heard guys were crying, pleading, and refusing to get back on lol. On that same ride we did a hard bank that tilted us 90 degrees and for a moment I thought for sure we were going down but apparently it was intentional. Sure didn't feel like it was pilot input based on what I had felt before.
