Hey guys,

I'm looking at a 92 LX mustang that's on BaT. The car is only about 1 1/2 hours from me. I've been in contact with the seller and plan on calling him this evening. I may go look at it this weekend.

If the car checks out, am I better off trying to make a deal in person? Or should I bid on it?

I know it comes down to what the seller wants for it, and it's definitely not a buyer's market right now.

My guess is he wants a premium, maybe more than what I'm willing to pay.

Thanks.

I agree that the seller is better off waiting for the auction to run out. It's a nice looking '92 with low miles. Nice color, too. Nice condition with a few paint chips here and there. Comes with a recent Marti report.

Brady, since he is local you could/should drive there to see it first hand and talk to him. While he likely is looking for a premium price, go with a figure in mind that you'd be comfortable with. You just might come to a meeting of the minds on the price, assuming you like what you see.

Unfortunately once it's on BAT according to the last seller I spoke with, he told me once it's on their they can't take it off and sell it privately. I am assuming that's for no reserve listings, I saw that LX yesterday real nice looking fox.

Thanks everyone.

I'll be calling him shortly, maybe ask him what the reserve is and feel him out a bit. If possible I may go check it out on Saturday.

I'm guessing he wants a premium like 20k or more....

I'm pretty once the car is on BaT, the seller can't sell the car in a different venue. I'm sure there is something in the contract you sign. BaT fox bodies have been getting a premium lately and the buyer also needs to pay a 5% fee.

If you really like the car, it might not be a bad idea to check it out in person. Looking at pictures only tells you so much. That will give you a better understanding of what you are willing to bid. If the car doesn't meet reserve, you'll have the sellers contact info and know where they stand regarding price.

The car looks real nice. Mostly stock, manual trans, mileage is pretty low, great color combo. I wouldn't be surprised if we see upper teens here.

Thanks for the help. I'm going to look at it tomorrow morning.

I am expecting it to see upper teens as well. We shall see.

When I found a car for my dad I messaged the guy and we all met in person. He tried offering cash but the guy wanted to obey BAT rules even though not paying a commission was a clear incentive. However, the process was extremely smooth - BAT is a great platform.

Take a lot of photos, Brady, because you will forget a lot of what you're going to see when you check it out tomorrow morning. I hope it works out for you, price wise, if you end up wanting this one. It IS nice!

I probably should, but I'll try to look it over good. I know it's got scratches and chips. As long as there is zero rust and straight is the main thing!

I just got back from checking out the car. It definitely has a lot more scratches, chips, ect than what the description and pictures show on BaT. Also a dent on the front of the hood.

It drives great, looks solid otherwise. The cruise control didn't work.

I'm still interested in it, but I hope someone doesn't expect this to be a 17-20k car and they pay that much sight unseen. Otherwise they might be disappointed.

Good that you checked it out in person. Pictures can hide a lot of things. Depending on how bad the scratches and chips are, you can do quite a bit of things on the cheap to make them look less noticeable. Looks like a solid car. Some BaT auctions end up below market value, but that's pretty rare today. Good luck.

And this is the reason I had to pull back on bidding on a couple of cars I was interested in. Some sellers don’t take detailed pics and some hide imperfections. Glad you were able to look at it before bidding.

Exactly. Some paint correction will make some appear less noticeable. But there is some scratches that definitely won't. And anyone that can't see it in person wouldn't know.

We shall see!

Make a bid you are comfortable with now that you have seen it. It someone outbids you, move on.
