The houses themselves are pretty far apart (the casita made ours pretty close to the wall for sure), but his yard had plenty of room and no need to put the hoop there

If I were you, I'd either:
1 - Risk long-term issues and get pissed for real with him and demand something happen NOW.
or
2 - Put up my own net so as not to have long-term issues with the neighbor.

The clear action here is a gate that prevents access to the side yard and a no trespassing sign. Position camera to capture both wall and gate. After that call the police and share video as evidence if the neighbor hops the wall and/or gate to retrieve said ball.
To be honest, it was a good laugh but it didn’t make me feel any more even. I just don’t operate that way as a considerate person.

The area is really good with families. After 11 years of infertility we finally had our daughter in January. Just wanted a good neighborhood for her to grow up in, and it’s been great except for this minor i inconsiderate neighbor

As mentioned, the only point I was making with it being the first house is he could be considerate when deciding his layout. My house didn’t just appear after the fact.

For what it's worth, I know how friggin annoying the sound of a basketball is. My neighbor's son used to play basketball at 2am. Thmp. Thmp. Thmp. Kadoonk.. THMPthmpthmpthmpthmp.. thmp... ... ... ... ... Thmp. Thmp. Thmp.
You can have legal fun with this. The guy obviously isn't your friend. Go buy some junk plywood and make a fence extension. Paint it neon green, purple, etc and have that side face his property.
Or, plant a bunch of prickly pear cacti on that side of your house. If they throw the basketball over, have fun! Even if they get the basketball, they won't want to touch it ever again.
Or, put a steering wheel club through the center of the basketball hoop.

1) Get a diesel tractor and run it 4-5 hours every afternoon
2) Get a bunch of nasty cats that go over and crap in his yard, shred his lawn furniture, jump on cars, etc daily
