I'm curious if anyone on SVTP has ever completed a Citizens Police Academy program in their town or city.

I've always been interested in law enforcement. Wanted to be a police officer but never pursued that dream. So my daughter, who knows I've always wanted to be a cop, informed me yesterday that my town offers an annual special program to its citizens called the Citizens Police Academy. It's open to town citizens over the age of 18. Participants get an overview of various units within the police department and cover topics such as crime analysis, narcotics, special weapons and tactics (SWAT), crime interdiction unit, investigative services, traffic enforcement, community response unit, K-9 unit and crime scene processing. I also found out that many other towns and cities offer this program. It's 8 weeks long and participants meet once a week from 6:30-8:30.

It's such a big area of interest for me so I'm going to jump at this opportunity in the Spring of 2019. The program is limited to 20 people and each has a background check done. Its intent is to familiarize citizens with the work a police officer does, and to improve the relationship between police officers and citizens. So while I won't become a police officer, I'll get to know more about the work they do.

So has anyone here on SVTP ever gone through a Citizens Police Academy?

Cant say I have. Now I have watched Police Academy: Citizens on Patrol.

Personally I grew up with hopes of becoming a Game Warden. Unfortunately it didn’t happen.

Been through a real academy. We dont have anything like that in NC. Why dont you just join the force, or do reserves. We have a lot of guys here, executives, business owners that go through police school here and volunteer several days a month. No shift, no schedule, just work as often or as little as you want.

Watch as many episodes of Reno 911 as possible before hand...it'll give you good background for police work and help with relevant questions to ask. @TK1299 can confirm.

Citizens Police Academy programs have been around for a few years.

Here's one for Marietta, GA. Marietta Police Department to have semiannual Citizens Police Academy in March

Other locations I found. There are many more.

@Outlaw99, I'm too old to join the force now. LOL. I'm just really interested in what goes on behind the scenes of the officers in my town, and elsewhere.

When I was on patrol I’ve had citizens police academy people do ride alongs. In SWAT we go to their meetings periodically and put on a presentation and show them some equipment and vehicles. It’s a basic familiarity with Law Enforcement procedures and they are exposed to every bureau and division at a department.
It really makes people pro police when they really see the truth, although I’m guessing most were pro police before enrolling.
I say go for it as it might motivate you to apply to the academy. I always wanted to be one and have zero regrets following this path. The reality of life will have no greater student than a P.O.

@CobraBob I've done 3. One for the city of Northglenn, City of Brighton and Adams County Sheriff. Each one had it's perks for being fun and seeing different LEO agencies. Both ACSO and Brighton PD took us to the facility where they do driving skills, TI simulators for life like scenarios, SWAT Teams and the "tools" wink wink they get to use for fun on the job. It's an amazing experience. Best part was it's free, all donated time by different officers

I don't think we have anything like that in Arizona. We have the Explorer program for kids, but that's all I'm aware of. Like someone else mentioned, you could just go thru an academy and become a reserve, but that's obviously another level of commitment. Or you could always just watch Live PD. :)
