1. Start by removing the factory lamps. Cut the connector off the harness and leave yourself enough wire to work with. Cut the connector off the new harness and splice/connect the old connector with the new harness. I chose to solder and heat shrink my connections, but you can do as you like.

DOHC,

Did your tails come with a new harness? As far as I can tell, they come tail lamps only?

Yea. The new tails have harnesses. You just clip you original with enough room to work and connect the wires according to colors with the '99/'01 one. Then jump the green wire the way I did.

If you have them in front of you it will actually make a lot more sense. Hope that helps.

I love the 99/01 taillights...I always wondered if I could do something like that...

Any chance you could PM me how you went about getting new ones from Ford? (and the cost?) Or was it as simple as walking into the parts department and ordering them?

(feel free to PM the price anyway).

TIA

I'm so happy I just scored a MINT set of 3K mile 99 Cobra tail lamps today off a wrecked car at an impound lot. While I don't own an 03 Terminator yet I am shopping and these lights were a must have, great write up and now I have them and GREAT instructions !

Those have always been my absolute favorite Mustang taillights. I prefer a bit of amber on them to break up all the red.

Very nice!

i have been thinkin about getting these, and getting a custom tint done, leaving the bottom three lights untinted.....the reverse, and 2 amber sections...

I just installed and this writeup was a great guide...however....why do you have to cut the green wire under the dash. I didn't and I noticed they work just fine. when I pressed the brakes the signals were still on etc. can someone please explain exactly what this fixes, enables, or disables by cutting that green wire....also couldn't find the location under the dash of my 03 cobra....thanks

What's the purpose of cutting it?

basically when you press the brake, the turn signal lights come on solid. so if you cut the green.....it stops that from happening.

So instead of 3 lamps lighting up with brakes right now it would be only 2 like stock?

I wouldn't mind all 3

Did this tonight on my Vert...worked first time.

The only thing that your writeup could clarify is that the green connection in the trunk is on the left side.

Also the old harness has 2 wires coming out that go into one on the new one. Or I suppose you could cut one.

But it worked first time, and now I'm going to buy a set for my Coupe.

Thanks a bunch, cause I love the 99/01 lights (almost bought one just for that instead of the 04). Boy what a mistake that would have been *wink* Now I have both.

Plus just think if someone rolls up on you and thinks you're a 99/01. :D

The wire to cut is to the right of the steering column...the plastic grey connector is imbedded back a bit...IIRC, the pic is upside down.

The brake interrupt wire that needs to be cut is a lot easier to find if you remove the drivers kick panel... there are three harness plugs behind it... The center one with a black male and grey female end is the one you want.. The other two are all black. Disconnect the plug and find pin 12... It's labeled on the back of the plug. Solid green wire. cut and tape out of the way...

Also another flasher part # if you don't feel like paying ford prices for a generic relay... EP-27 from damn near any auto parts store.

can you give more detail about the harness and 2 wires that go into one ?
