If your looking for a mechanic job I'd STRONGLY consider being a mechanic on helicopters. It's MUCH more in depth that working on cars or trucks, and pays better if you get out and use the skills the Corps has taught you. 6112 CH-46E mechanic, 6113 CH-53E mech, 6114 UH-1N/AH-1W Huey/Cobra mech, and 6116 MV-22 Osprey mech are what I'd look into. You'll learn ALOT, experience lots of things you'll never forget, have the benefit of being in the airwing and learn a new trade that is in demand in the civilian world, and many other benefits. ANything in the 6100 field and you won't go wrong.

First of all, good luck to you.

And don't pay any attention to some of the comments of those who have NEVER served in the United States Marine Corps.

Going in on an open contract could have good or bad consequences, all about the needs of the Marine Corps with an open contract. Regardless of which MOS you end up with, always remember that you will be a Marine first and foremost. Keep that in mind and try your best to live by the high standards that the Corps expects of its Marines and you will do just fine.

And it will be tough...as it should be.

Thanks for joining up to defend our country man. I've been doing it for 21 years now (NAVY) and plan on making it 30. Not only will the Marines teach you a specialized skill, they will pay for your continuing educational oppurtuinties to pursue your degree. You absolutely need to take advantage of everything the Marines has to offer. My MBA didn't cost me one red cent. Something else to consider down the road are Officer programs offered by the Marine Corp. I was enlisted for 13 years then applied for an Officer program. I've been commisioned for 8 years now and have loved every minute of it. Good luck to you. It says a lot about a person who joins the military with our country at war. I signed open contract back in 03 and still got to pick an MOS. Granted "nothing was guaranteed" but I got exactly what I wanted.

If you have to pick an MOS I would suggest something that is going to require a clearance. If you can get one. Just like my old boss used to say "Anyone can go to school, not everyone can get a clearance" It will make you more marketable when you eas.

Other than that my only advice is STAY OUT OF TROUBLE. Don't ride a motorcycle unless you have the safety course, don't drink if you aren't 21. Etc.

Tell your recruiter you want to be a MP. Reason why I say MP, is cause when you leave the Marines, many doors will be open as far as careers go. I was in the Marines and I was in an artillery unit. Not many people in the real world need cannon fodders :p .. but on a serious not, if i could do it again, i'd go MP. The military police school the Marines have to offer is ****ing awsome. Trust me, especially if you wanna a federal law enforcement job in the future :)

Good luck and thank you.

first off welcome and Semper Fi. hopefully there is something you can do about changing that open contract. as a few others have said if you like mechanic stuff try to get on the wing side, much more opertunities if you decide to get out.

and for those saying MP did you ever serve as a MP? I have many many friends that hate being and MP. Sure it sounds cool, being a military cop but its not that cool when you get into it, unless you like standing on the front gate waiving people in. as far as it opening doors when you get out, any police department loves to see a Marine come in. I had offers for 3 police departments when I got out and I was aviation ordnance. so its not really if you have mp experiance.

same thing goes for motor t. they thought it would be cool to work on all the military equipment but found out fast it sucks. Not saying everything on the wing side is all gravy, you will have your ups and downs to any job in the Corps. Just remember everything is what YOU make of it. Hell I had some of my best times in the worst places and conditions.

Think long and hard what you want to do and have a plan. then have a back up plan, and anouther for that one. you get 3 choices for you mos. dont let them chose for you if you can change that.

well the open contract is just to get me enlisted, i have to resign another contract with whatever MOS when i swear in and ship out to bootcamp. Im not really worried about all the you going to iraq and going to shoot a gun and die. If i do then i do, im not scared. at least i know i will have the best training for it!

Basic infantry bud, that's where it's at. Just kidding, it's not for everyone, but if you like that kind of thing it's definitely a different experience.

Honestly Dude, I think its great what you are enlisting in the marine's I am not a marine but by speaking to someone that i personally know that's a marine and hearing from other people that have relatives in the marines its not what they say it is, and your not promised what your enlisting for, I will tell you this right now, They will send you to boot camp teach how to fire gun and basically throw you into the war, until they say you can come out, I know some people may think different and may think its great, your not guranteed to come home, I have total support for marines. but like i said before most of the time they lie to you about thing's they only real good thing about it is if your not financially healthy etc, they will be for your college.
You need to just be quiet. Your information is incorrect. And its spelled Marine...
Buddy,

I'm a Marine and I can tell you that YOU DO NOT WANT TO GO OPEN CONTRACT! They'll stick you in what ever shittie job the Corps need numbers in. Again, DO NOT GO OPEN CONTRACT! Was your ASVAB score high? If so, I would go Intel the job opportunities for when you get out are vast. Motor-T is a decent job… But do you want to be a truck driver when you get out? I strongly suggest you getting into something that will benefit you when you get out.

If you're in college stay in college.

God bless,
-Arron

Sorry to say, but if you already signed the contract and enlisted as "Open Contract", then you're stuck with that. There will be no more discussions about picking MOS's. You'll be at the mercy of the needs of the Corps.

But on the flip side... I enlisted open contract and got put into an MOS that I love. Smalls Arms Repair. I get to play with guns all day.
I signed an open contract when I enlisted, and then a few days later, the one for my specific MOS. Although, I agree if you don't have a good/honest recruiter and half a brain you shouldn't go open contract, but it isn't the worst thing to do. Just think it though.

The Marines only have two boot camps so the time that he joins is crucial. Try another recruiting office.
Just for clarification, he's talking locations for male recruits. MCRD Parris Island or MCRD San Diego. Females are only trained at MCRD Parris Island.

FWIW, if your family has a history in the Corps, you can go to that MCRD for training.....

If you want to be setup for a great job after you get out, and pretty much be on the fast-track for promotions.. go Intel.

I'm a 0261, the schooling that I went through provided me with quite a few college credits, a TS/SCI clearance, and a high 5, to low 6 figure salary guaranteed when I get out (if the economy isnt shit in a few years) with a job that as of right now is still in high demand for people who know wtf they're doing.

I'd say use the Corps as a tool to set you up for life in the future, that's what you should do if you are smart.. Infantry will get you nowhere when you get out, my friend did 4 years, was 8th and I (presidential clearance, that's $$$), living in the DC area and still couldnt get jack for a job... became a bartender.

Another job would be avionix (i think) working on the electrical systems in jets/helicopters, that's usually good for some decent money when you get out.

But in my opnion, THE BEST MOS in the Corps would be crewchief. Flying in Helo's, prepping them / taking care of them, knowing each bit and piece of your aircraft and knowing it's actually appreciated by your pilots. There are a lot of MOS's where you never get the satisfaction of knowing that what you do is truly appreciated by someone even if they dont tell you (the Marine Corps isnt big on giving you pats on the back for a job well done). I would hate my MOS if it wasnt for the fact that I make things that EVERYONE uses wherever they go, and if they know it or not, my shit can make a huge difference to someone who needs it (I make maps, special map products for whatever operation we're supporting.. dry work, but in the end it really does matter).

There's some food for thought. Don't just join for the hell of it, because you really dont know if you're going to like it or not, being a Marine isn't for everyone.. So set yourself up with something you think you want to do when/if you get out. Even if you do 20 years or more you're still gonna want to work when you retire.

Yeah i was thinking of the aviation field, but wasnt to sure about the one year of school thing. Being a marine is someting i really want to do. Going from being pampered by my parents my whole life and being out of shape to a marine is something i cant wait for. Ive already progressed from not being able to barely anything to running the 3 mile in 24 and doing 7 pull-ups 65 crunches in 2min, and 50 pushups in 2mins. I know i still got a long ways to go but if you knew me before i started all the training its a total transformation. In 2 months ive went from 246lbs to 215lbs out of shape 20 year old idiot.lol . Thanks for all the support guys! My top three choices are 1. Crewchief 2. Motor transport 3. still thiking of the third.

re-check your sources:read:
my dad was in the marines for 30 years, they do more for you then "teach you to fire a gun"

They teach you only what is allowed in your MOS !!!
You will have to wait until your contract is up to re-negotiate .
