If you can't drive a 5 + 4, you can't drive a manual

willing to wager a bunch here have never heard of a 5 + 4
Apparently I can't drive a manual.

My Dad has drove a semi for 40ish years and I'm willing to bet anyone who knows a truck driver has had to listen to them talk about splitting gears.

I have driven Macks with no PS, 5 + 4 trans, the steering wheel was damn near as big in diameter as the tires on a Mustang
It makes you really appreciate new technology. Guys back then were a different breed. Get the job done no matter what, given what you have.

all of my trucks are automatic now so times have definitely changed
i forget what year it started but if you got your CDL after that date it says if you're allowed to drive a manual or not.

I mean, I get it that auto's move quicker, steering wheel holders are far less likely to blow up drive line parts and no clutch to replace/adjust but people should still know how to drive em

If you take the driving test in an auto they put an automatic only designation on your DL.

The auto is so much more driver and work friendly in our industry, but I agree with you, everyone should know how to bang some gears

Towards the end of my run at UPS (almost 4 years ago), most tractors were auto save for the older Macks. Package cars...couple dinosaurs were still floating around. When I had to hit the road, I preferred the one manual package car we still had. Nobody else ever took it so she was always available. Total turd in first and second, but once she spooled in third, she came alive. lol Road testing was based on whether or not your fleet had any manual transmissions in it. No man trans, okay to test in an auto.

My fleet here is all auto, mostly Eaton with a few Allison sprinkled in. Steering wheel holders is right. Watching these guys do tug tests and slide tandems makes me cringe. It's a miracle we don't burn through more clutches.

Sometime after 2012 in Indiana. I tested in an auto, no auto-only designation.

HD mechanic by trade but I have had a CDL for 30ish years.
Auto shift is the way now but I would have a manual (18sp) if I were to buy a truck. Autos just don’t feel “right” to me. Guess I’m just an old guy.

I work at a collision shop for big trucks

Probably 1-2 out of every 10 we get are manuals, rest are autos.

Dad's new Volvo is Auto. Constantly bitches about it not being able to find gears when taking off. He's about to retire too so I think he's just over it in general.

I was against the auto until I worked with one for a whole day, then I was sold. but my trucks do a lot of stop and go all day. A road tractor I'd definitely want manual.

Drivers often hate autos till they have been in one for awhile then you can’t pry them out of it. Not everyone but often the case.
