I know a bunch of you guys are like me and love watching Forged in Fire. For me, my interest in knife making started about 8 years ago with a video on Youtube called "The Birth of a Tool." A couple years ago, I decided to give it a try, just doing basic stock removal. Not wanting to sink a lot of money into a hobby I wasn't sure about, I went with a minimalist approach: some files, a bench vise, some sandpaper, and a couple bars of good steel. I had a blast making my first few knives, but anybody who has ever made a knife using only files can tell you it's A LOT of filing.
Here's my first couple knives, made out of 1084 and hours upon hours of filing.
This past summer, like many of us, I found myself with some extra time on my hands. I decided making knives was something I wanted to actually devote some time, money, and effort into. I bought a 2x72" belt grinder and some other miscellaneous tools, built a mini forge to do my own heat treating, and started experimenting with different handle materials and grinds. I'm having more fun than ever, and just looking to get better and better with each batch.
Here's the latest ones that are almost finished (just need edges) that I'm making for my kids and wife. These are made out of 1/4" 80CrV2 with custom resin and stabilized wood scales.
I feel like I've come a long way, but I still have a long way to go. I learn more and more with every knife I make.
Any other knife makers out there? Whether you're just starting out, thinking about starting, or are a pro with years of experience under your belt, I thought this might be a place to share pics of your work.
