Hey all,
I've mentioned it in various threads over the last 6 months but as of last Friday I am taking on a new role in my life - father! My 8 lb 7 oz, 22" long son Owen made his grand entrance into the world at 4:53 PM on Friday, April 5.
It's a long story but I'll sum it up as concise as possible. Our due date was actually April 1st (no joke), which was a Monday, but that came and went without any progress suggesting he was coming last week so an induction date was set for April 8th. Then on Wednesday that week, I get home after work and a workout and my wife is laying in bed and saying that she's having a lot of pressure in her stomach. This was somewhat common during the pregnancy but when it didn't get better we called the hospital's on call line and since we were past due they told us to come in.
She was showing some progress and as it turns out the pressure was actually contractions. Since we were past due they decided to keep us in the hospital and induce him. This decision was made about 8 PM on Wednesday.
So we get admitted and not a ton happens for the first 16 hours. After that they ramp her up twice on Pitocin (inducing drug) and make 3 attempts to break her water before they are fully successful.
Finally on Friday afternoon they realize she's not even far enough along to start pushing so a C section is ordered, which is exactly what we didn't want but it's the best choice at this point. We get all ready for surgery and my wife is freaked, she requests to have earbuds in to listen to Pandora radio so she can't hear herself getting cut open. Well, barely 10 minutes after they start, I hear the cries of my new son! She didn't want the baby in that condition so they pull me out to hold him. As the nurse is showing me the baby I hear someone say "we have trouble in the operating room". After the lengthy labor her body was run down and started hemorrhaging - so here I am holding my 5 minute old baby and unsure what is happening to my wife, scary to say the least.
As it turns out, she lost a liter of blood - almost enough to require a transfusion but they were able to stop it with drugs. I made sure to be front and center with our baby once she was rolled back in. Pretty special moment when she first saw him and even in her drug induced stupor she had tears in her eyes and said "my baby" when she finally saw him.
We ended up staying in the hospital 4 nights since it was such a rough labor/delivery and her body needed a bit of time to recover. It was pretty brutal to stay that long but that's what it took.
My wife was such a rockstar over this entire experience. Constant, uninterrupted birthing pain for nearly 48 hours yet she stayed focused on getting our son born. My son has been amazing also - as long as he is well fed anyway. He was stuck in the birth canal for 24+ hours but his heart rate only dipped a bit once or twice, tough kid to say the least.
In his first partial day of life he met one set of grandparents (my in-laws) and the next day met my parents, my grandma, his aunt (my sister), uncle, 3 cousins and a great aunt.
This kid is amazing though. He can lift his head off my our chest if we are laying flat. The CNA giving him a bath said he is strong and was trying to crawl during his bath. The nurse that changed a diaper put him on stomach and he kicked his legs and put his arms out and took 2 little crawl steps - at 2 days old.
Anyway, enough talking about him, here is little Owen. We are pretty biased but we think he's a good looking, well developed baby and everyone immediately notices his impressive head of hair!
And him with his great grandma who is 88 but also a rockstar -
And with his adoring older cousins -
His nursery is car/Route 66 themed so we are starting him early. My dad was a chip off the ol' block, I was a chip off the ol' block so we have no doubt he will be as well.
Thanks for reading guys but just wanted to share that there will be another red blooded, all American, gun loving, Ford gearhead coming along in the future.
