I can understand the concern. But I also am skeptical of any doomsday idea for performance.

With youtube/video services help, it seems like car enthusiasts are beginning to grow/reach audiences like never before. Cool cars are more popular than they used to be. Ford just made an ST version of the explorer/edge for goodness sake. When was the last time you heard of soccer mom jane wanting a performance mom mobile?

What's going to happen is the speed/power of these cars are going to get curtailed soon. That's a given. Not every car can make 700hp off the lot. That would be a bit much for insurance to swallow. Realistically what will happen though is the technology imbued into the cars will get better. They will become more efficient. Do more with less. And eventually be as good as driving an economy car in terms of MPG.

well obviously the after market market is going to disappear, we just wont have anything brand spankin new to hang our hats on. This is why the used car market is booming right now. New car dealerships are stocking more used cars than new and they're making money hand over fist with that.

If everyone converted to electric cars with home charging stations, the current infrastructure couldnt handle it I dont think. People bitch about gas prices, but how hard will people bitch about their electric bills when they have to recharge their friggen cars everyday?

Im going to be that asshole that drives his hydrocarbon powered cars and trucks till he's dead. All while laughing at the new car assholes and their soul-less electric vehicles.

In 30 years there might be 30% driving electric cars. Maybe.

Just wait till the battery waste starts ozzing into the ground and cars depreciate twice as fast.

Even it is the last hurrah (which I doubt), there will always be a used car market full of what you want. Sure, they might get more expensive. But, you gotta pay to play.

Too much money in oil for the Governnment to really give in to hybrid/electric everything. Never gonna happen. I'm just waiting for the Governnment to step in and cap horsepower/torque on these things! It's insane!

LOL, your last paragraph reminded me of an old story from years ago that was in Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords. One of their writers wrote about an apocalyptic scenario where performance cars had been banned and were being rounded up, taken to the crusher. The lone hero in this story was fighting like hell to save his mustang. The hero in his souped up LX coupe made a break for Canada, out running all the EPA goons in the process...well that was the gist of it.

IMO it depends greatly on who is elected in 2020. Democrat Socialism is gaining steam with more wide stream support, and with it comes the Green Bill, which seeks to eradicate fossil fuel. 4 years ago I would have said the radical left's radical changes wouldn't be widely accepted by the populace. Now, I'm not so sure. Changes are happening too quickly to ignore them. The future no longer holds the assurances that I hold dear today.

If that happens, I vote we all free Patriots move to Texas and push for secession from the Union.

japan had that until I think 2012 where there was a gentelmen agreement between all the domestic mfg's that no vehicle for the JDM road or streets would go past 276 HP or 205 NM. But again it was just an unwritten rule not a law passed by the Japanese Parliament

Naw, that was in the late 80's and 90's.

They self regulated around the 300hp mark to keep the Government out of it. They also installed 180kph(112mph) speed limiters on most cars.

Cars like the 1989 R32 GTR would dyno around 280whp, meaning it was making way more then the advertised 276hp.

Othe cars like the Supra MKIV* and GTO (3000GT* claimed around 300bhp in Japan but then marketed at 320hp in the US. I then the 300ZX Z32 was marketed as 276bhp but was 300hp in the US.

*there are also multiple varients of turbos on these cars.

yeah I knew they had it but I thought it was more recent than the late 90's when the Mfg's just decided to walk away.

Noise wise I believe it is, but as electric/hybrid power configurations become the norm but performance will continue to improve. Big displacement IC engines have been on the way out for years now. The IC engine will be around for a long time but like anything else new technology will replace and surpass what was. I don't like it but hey change usually sucks one way or another. JMO.

With all the high horsepower cars that have been rolling out of the manufacturers over that last few years, anyone ever get depressed when you think this may be the last hurrah? Dont get me wrong I love the HP wars etc, but how much longer will it last before our loud obnoxious engines and exhaust are replaced with the sound of silence.
Electric/hybrid vehicles are rapidly becoming the norm. I'm wondering how much longer we will have our new models of gas powered V8s.

Fast and loud high HP cars will always be around as long as theres a demand for them. Thats capitalism, and supply and demand.

Government, with their going green agenda, can eat my ass.

I never said anything about fast and high HP cars going anywhere. I'm wondering how much longer they will have internal combustion.

Internal combustion engines will still be around for a while as long as there is still demand for them. The automotive industry might slide in a couple of hybrid sub models and/or models here and there but based on recent history those likely will not sell well enough to be a feasible option in todays market especially if the prices on them increase and charging station availability doesn't increase as well. Manufacturers have shown that they are capable of building engines that are not only more powerful but are also more fuel efficient and emit less CO2 emissions. Further improvements in limiting emissions all while increasing power will come with time.

Im just thinking, it's only a matter of time before our muscle cars are electric powered.
Better emissions
Better performance
Better reliability
