All of those are highly dependent on the MOS/AFSC you get. Plus you’re looking at a 4 year commitment (there are exceptions). As someone in a high demand AFSC that hates it...I could put my nose to the grinder and get certs and schooling that will net me 6 figures on the outside. But, I hate the job, hate the environment of said job. So not going to do it on the outside unless I have to to make ends meet. There are thousands in the AF that wish to be in my “predicament”.

Yeah i get you. The rate i signed up for required 6 years, but i shit didnt go my way and off i went. Unfortunately regret it every year.

Went to a automotive school, waste of 30k. Graduated in 2009 and I hope to have my loans paid off by the end of next year.

Totally would’ve went a different route if I could do it again.

Side note: I tried to go back to school in 2016 to get my associates degree in Mechanical Engineering from a community college and they told me I made too much money to get assistance.

Haven't read the thread, but I have two kids in college that I've been paying off the hip for eight years.

Increases in college expenses have far outstripped the continuing increase in healthcare expenses. Why? Because colleges can. Why? Because of student loans.

It's a damn shame.

A) a huge portion of our population isnt medically fit to serve.

B) an even lower number is mentally capable.

We are kicking kids out at an alrming rate for inability to adapt
That's encouraging.
What happened to getting your butt kicked in basic, and then recycled if you failed for being pathetic. Then during round two you were beat into shape, or you died trying.

These kids are getting to the fleet and realizing that the pay is low and the work is mind numbing. So they cry foul.

In my 6 months on board this ship ive kicked out 3 of my own. 3 out of 17...

They would be kicked, but not out. They volunteered. They signed on the dotted line. The days of hands on training needs to be put back in place. They can whine and cry when they finish the contract.

Didn’t read past the first page. I didn’t go to college. So, no loans for me.

Several issues.

1. I dont have time to babysit. With a hugely compressed training cycle and extended deployments I need every person capable of doing everything they are tasked with.

2. Our force protection watches are stretched thin trying to maintain a semblance of quality of life. When these kids start complaining about metal health issues the first thing we have to do is pull their weapons quals.

3. **** them.

Graduated from Engineering school with just under 70k in loans in 13. Been paying ~$1000/month since I graduated and have about $18k left. Wife is in a similar boat but going back to get her doctorate in nursing so shes racking up the student loan debt. I don't think we'll see loan forgiveness in the time were paying ours off. Mine will be gone before I turn 31 which was always a goal for me but the wife's will take a few years. People make to much money off student loans so I don't think they are going anywhere.

So what is stopping you from going? I haven’t filed a FAFSA form (or whatever it’s called) since I started back at school, as I know I’m in the same boat. Classes are not out of the realm of me paying out of pocket. This semester 2 classes at 7 hours was close to a grand. Next semester 3 classes at 10 hours is a little over a grand. That’s at a CC mind you.

You may just want to hold off. The new girl, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, announced that part of her presidential bid in 2020 will include a pledge to forgive all student debt and make future education free.

With any luck, you and your wife could be off the hook altogether.

Lol

Well played

You already know I'm from a military family. Bunch of Marines gather on the holidays at my house. What I do know is that after a few boots up the butt, their brain begins to relocate to the skull.

Oh, you're mentally unstable; good, you won't feel a thing when I knock your whiny, stupid immature butt out.

Gone are the good days when boys could be taught to be a man and accept the responsibility of accepting the challenge of any military branch. It's sad.

Reading your response breaks my heart and pisses me off.

Well for one, these have all been girls.
Second my career isnt worth hitting a dirt bag junior sailor. Theyre easier to replace.
Third if one of these morons kills themself, I will not be responsible.

I joined 20 years ago. This isn't the same military.

I have a family member that went to a state school and then became a veterinarian. It was ~275k after all said and done. The first job paid 56k/year with no real benefits. Obviously, that didn't work. She uses the income based repayment program where you pay ~10% of your wages and then you get a balloon tax in 30 years. We're talking ~600/mo which doesn't make a dent in the interest. It's been a few years now and they are up to ~85k/yr and it's ~1050/mo. Again, not doing much in the repayment department. It was over 330k the last time I heard about it. She'll be okay as long as the IBR program exists and absolutely screwed if it goes away.

Unfortunately, the job is too much. It's physically and emotionally demanding and it's really taking a toll on her health. The burn out is real and she's not even 30.

No, not at all. My brother was on Parris Island in 97. It is definitely not the same. That boy went through training, and completed the crucible with a broken foot. He said being a recycle wasn't happening.

He had his foot rebroken and set on his short leave after basic. He didn't get a break with a cast. They stuck him in a recruiting office until he was able to have the cast removed. Then it was off to Camp Lejeune.

I regret not joining in 94. That is when I met the woman that is now my wife. Her father retired from the Army as a Command Sgt Major, same as his dad. She wasn't interested in continuing life hopping from one place to the next.

To college I went, and I am glad I did. I would likely not be with the same hot girl I am now. In January we will have been married 22 years. I regret not serving, but I will never regret my family.
