Chiropractor.

Most likely (as you get older your back muscles weaken normally) you had a disc move or it is still out of alignment. Your muscles over react to prevent pain but creates more pain.
A Chiropractor will straighten you out, give you exercises and stretches to work on. You will walk out after the first visit "vertical".
I have the same issue maybe every three years, and the Chiropractor gets me back up and going quick.

Ibuprophen and ice. Let it heat up naturally then ice again.

Skip the chiropractor. See a specialist to figure out what happened then find a good physical therapist and address the weakness that caused it. Sometimes it's core strength, other times it's hips, hamstrings, etc.

Finding a good physical therapist is the hard part. For every one good one there are a thousand bad ones. If they don't have you lifting real weights go somewhere else. Most will give you a resistance band, body weight exercises, or 2 lb dumbells which is a sign you'll never get better. You will be better served finding someone that primarily deals with really high level athletes.

Chiropractor = Snakeoil that give temporary relief, but does no permanently fix the underlying issue.

How are you feeling OP? Today is the first day since Sunday that I feel somewhat normal. Only took muscle relaxers and ibuprofen, stretched as much as I could and kept moving around each hour.

I vote chiropractor as well. I have lower back problems with scoliosis and the chiropractor is the quickest fix you can get.

I believe in the chiropractor. I have had my back go out at times and they are the ones that get it back in order. Some may have bad experience but it works for me. They will fix the problem while other doctors either try to hide it with meds of fix it with surgery. I don't want surgery as back surgery is the most painful and more likely to go wrong. This if from those, including my wife who have had back surgery.

A chiropractor might be bullshit on the internet, but I have repeatedly walked in to the office in pain and stooped over, and walk out walking upright and 90% less pain. Now they often try to sell you some gimmick device but overall experience for me has been great.

Prior to the chiropractor, I got shots in my back.

I'm pro chiropractic as well.

I've had chiropractors adjust me for dizziness (car accident), pinched nerve (football), knee pain (compensating for a twisted ankle), and swelling in my foot (bicycle accident).

The first two years of chiropractic school very closely mirrors medical school including: Gross Anatomy, Histology, Pathology, Biochemistry, Metabolism, Microbiology, etc.

As other people have mentioned, finding a GOOD chiropractor is key to where they will assess not only the symptoms, but the rest of the body as well in case the pain is referred or compensatory.

A word of caution to those who self adjust, not understanding the proper function, range of motion, limits, technique, or direct cause (in the event of referred or compensatory pain) could do more harm than good.

Been there done that. Chiropractors are just over paid witch doctors - seriously pass on that.

You’ll need to see a real doctor or physical therapist if it stays bound up for more then a few days.

As mentioned, hot and cold. There are stretches that help, like wiggling your hips.

A doctor can prescribe muscle relaxers if you are having muscle spasms.

Also, wet and dry heat are different. Try a hydrobed at Planet Fitness, or some hot wet towels, not just an electric heating pad (dry).

It's been over a week and yesterday when I was stretching I heard a pop and I feel fine now.

Same thing the other day for me as well. I was stretching, felt a pop and the little pain I was still having went away! That was right after I called and set up an appointment with the chiropractor for today, which I'm going to anyway because I already set it up. Glad to hear you're doing better.

You know the pain you describe is what little Asian women can cure by walking on your back. #fact

Go see a neurologist that specializes in spine. You need an MRI. Treatment can be determined from there. Everyone has already mentioned excellent treatment options but you can't decide the best treatment without knowing what's really going on. ... I'm a registered nurse for 9 years. I work in the largest ER in the Southeast US. I see it every day. I also have a herniated lumbar disc myself and there are many treatment options that all have advantages. PM me if you need anything further or want some free advice.

I just saw your reply glad to hear you are feeling better. Sounds like you might have a bulging disc if it acts up again recommend getting an MRI by the way I'm a strong believer in Chiropractic but you have to find the right chiropractor. If you go to see a neurologist find one who is D.O. who is willing to work out a treatment plan that includes Chiropractic and physical therapy

Thanks! Went this morning to a chiropractor and he x-rayed and showed me what's up. Did the whole heat pad, muscle stimulation stuff and then he did his thing. Feeling better already and I think a few more visits, I'll be good. Biggest issue for me is my flexibility sucks ass and I need to start doing a lot more of that.
