Dang. This is frightening. I just had to lay out yesterday because I was woken up by the worst case of heartburn in my life. Kept me up for a solid 3 hours in the middle of the night. Then kept getting random bad acid reflux yesterday while trying to rest.

Took a prilosec last night (went and bought some) and all is well in the land.

I'm going to have to lay off beer I guess.

Just a word of advice. Don’t rely on over the counter PPI’s to help with your problem. Normally if it happens occasionally or no more than twice in one week you should be good. If it persists, see a GI immediately! The best preventative for cancer or Barrets is to take action. Also, try these lifestyle changes below:

- don’t have a big dinner 2-3 hours before bedtime
- don’t eat and lay down, wait at least two hours
- talk a small walk after a large meal to aid digestion
- eat smaller meals
- look into digestive enzymes
- chew food throughly

I don’t feel GERD or reflux is even discussed enough until it’s too late

Thanks for the word of advice. Luckily it doesn't persist. So far I've not had a recurring issue and today my stomach feels much better. What's weird.. It seems like if I take a single Prilosec I'm good for months. But as they say, Acid Reflux issues are hereditary. I know dad has had his fair share of issues. I've been a bit more gentle to my body than he was though at my age.

Glad to hear! My reflux comes from my moms side when stress is involved. Nobody else in my family has asthma so that’s a contributing factor as to why I have GERD and they don’t.

Turns out it’s not GERD. The manometry results came back in and they are saying it’s a “mild motility issue” most likely achlasia... :/

Oh man I hate GERD. I’ve always had some heartburn when I drank but it would go away with tums or an another antacid. Now priolosec is the only thing that works, and if I stop taking it after a couple weeks the heartburn comes back. I made an appointment with my doctor to see what options I have.

Good luck OP and everyone else dealing with this

You too man. Hopefully they’ll get a fix for you and not just a temporary band aid approach!

I really feel like reflux/GERD aren’t discussed enough until it’s too late

Honestly, you could take this time to do a water fast or juice fast. Then set your body up with foods that tell the body to heal itself. L-glutamine and bone broth help rebuild digestive tract. I just picked up some Bison broth myself from vit shoppe.

I'd recommend a gluten and sugar free non processed diet. Lay off the alcohol, increase natural b vitamins since its nerve related.

And maybe worth a shot to look into dessacated intestines. Company that makes it is called ancestral supplements.

Thanks. But since this started I’ve went on a diet that cut out all the joys of life pretty much and it hasn’t done much for me.

Normally a prokinetic drug and a PPI would be used to help treat the symptoms. But, my body is metabolizing the PPI too fast and it’s only half ass working unfortunately :/ so I still have heartburn, regurgitation, and occasionally issue swallowing.

They want to address the issues at hand which is why surgery is going to be most likely. So it’s just a waiting game for me as of now.

Just an update on the issue!

I’ve since seen one of the many surgeons who specialize in GERD surgery at Methodist here in Houston, and he happened to know a GI doc who deals with motility issues.

They found I have “hypothyroidism” which may be contributing to my minor motility disorder. Won’t know until I’ve seen the endocrinologist.

He and the surgeon have been working back and forth and it looks like for whatever reason my LES just got really weak, which sucks but could be worse.

I’m having another EGD and a first time bravo ph study done on 6/19 as it’s the last test I need before surgery.

The barium swallow showed no issues with motility but did show reflux.

So hopefully within two months, I’ll be fixed and have my life back.

I have hypothyroidism but it didn't contribute to my motility issues. Been taking medicine for it for years. I took a gastric emptying test and it also showed nothing out of the ordinary. Ended up going to a different GI and he diagnosed me with gastroparesis. He put me on metoclopamide for a short time and it worked wonders. Night and day difference. You can't stay on the medicine long as it can create nasty side effects but I didn't notice anything bad. The medicine along with small diet changes was a game changer for me.

Man that’s good to hear! Anything GI related is nasty business I’ve learned. Yea, they tried that for me and after a week I was having chest pains, blood pressure was like 180/120 needless to say I had to stop :/

That sucks. Yeah the side effects can be brutal so I got lucky. They do make another medicine, domperidone, that supposedly doesn't have those side effects but I don't know how effective it is.

So another update: last week went to the ER with sharp pains in my stomach that have been going on since this whole ordeal. Originally thought to be some mild gastritis, turned out to be my gallbladder.

I’ve had numerous contrast ct scans and ultrasounds showing nothing.

This past Monday morning I felt the pain coming back so I went back to the ER. Luckily, they ran the same tests to which one showed inflammation and they admitted me.

The doctor had the knowledge luckily to order a “HIDA scan”. The test is supposed to show the organ working but never did.

Tuesday morning they had surgery to pull it out and it turns out it had gangrene on it and been dead for a long time now.

Since removed, my heartburn is gone but I still have some incidences of reflux.

So one step closer to getting this all fixed.

If there’s one tip I have, it’s that if you feel pain, have multiple tests and opinions before you just take there’s nothing wrong for an answer.
