Good man! I'm glad to see not everyone that doesn't work in O&G is jumping for joy because they're saving a few dollars at the pump while their neighbors are being laid off and can barely pay their bills. Then you get some people like the guy few pages back that says if you collect UC you're a taker SMH

I'm in O&G as well and I'm the sole provider for my family. Needless to say, I am worried that my time could come this year, though I've already survived 3 rounds of layoffs.

Restructure in my company happened today.

Fortunately I'm still here... but layoffs have officially happened

It doesn't help, but it's just one small piece of the puzzle

I'm coming up on 2 months of no job. Can't find anyone looking for Geologist or any type of geoscience position.

OP, take inventory for a minute. You are still young, obviously bright and intelligence, but have chosen a job path that, in the foreseeable future, is a dead end. Yes, the oil patch will recover, but it will be along time and not to the level seen in recent years. Take the oppunity to retrain into a different disciple of engereeing. Example, in the next Administration, it is highly likely that the Key Stone pipe line will be built, what skills will it need. Point being, look wider than where you are and look longer into the future. Good Luck!

Oh I have no emotional or desperate ties to O&G. I went to school for aerospace, designed airline seats for three years and then spent the past year and a half at my company learning, getting certified in and designing complex hydraulic systems. I've always made sure to hone some sort of applicable skill to avoid getting shoe-horned into a specific industry. I pretty much told myself as soon as I went to this O&G equipment manufacturing company that my next job would not be in oil. I gained exponential experience compared to the previous job so I'm looking elsewhere.

I actually have a decently promising lead in Washington (state) doing design work on hydraulic equipment. Hopefully it pulls through.

OP, ever find employment?

I'm coming up on 5 1/2 months now and haven't been offered a position yet. Geologist with 6 years of experience and I've applied to oil/gas positions, but about 3-4 months ago I started trying to apply to the environmental side of things. I've had 3 interviews (state and large bank), but nothing has gone through. With the energy industry being down and my lack of experience in any other sector it's pretty much impossible. It's really hard to keep trying and believing you're going to get something when nothing is out there that's in your wheelhouse/major or even close to it.

This sucks. I've got a family, mortgage, etc. I had a backup as the internet sales manager at a car dealership so hopefully that's still available. I'd have to work Saturdays and the pay will likely suck, but my unemployment is about to run out and I've got to do something until I find an actual career.

If people bought gas guzzling domestic cars, we'd kill 2 with one stone.

I'm sorry to hear its been so long. Unfortunately, a geologist background may make it a bit tougher to find a position than an engineering background.

I actually just signed a job offer yesterday. My wife and I sold our house in Houston (closing date is getting pushed back due to the flooding but luckily our house made it out dry) and arrived in Seattle Sunday night. We'll be here for two months while I go through a training period before permanently moving down to Vancouver, WA. I'll be a Project Manager/Designer (basically design engineering work) for a hydraulics distribution company up here.

Unfortunately with so many people in O&G losing their jobs, the primary ones I see getting hired are the ones that are willing to move away from wherever it is they're currently at. Take Houston for example: the guys that absolutely refuse to leave or even try a different industry are the ones still searching for work. You've got to be open minded to moving away. I know that's easier said than done and it was easier for my wife and I since we have no kids but its really the best way to get something new.

Pretty sure the OPEC negotiations or whatever just fell through so O&G isn't coming back anytime soon. I'm happy I'll be out of it.

It's incredibly tough right now. No companies are hiring as exploration has been, is and will be put on hold for another year or so.

Agreed that it's easier to find something when searching the entire country, but with a kid, entire family (daughters grandparents here), etc...I don't think I could do that to her. Looks like we might be selling our home really soon. Good thing is it should bring in a decent profit (30-40k), but it's still a very rough time. Anxiety through the roof!

Grats on the new job. I hear you on the flexibility thing. I got laid off from a job as a network admin when the economy crapped the bed 6-7 years ago and got hired on doing healthcare IT. I still use a lot of my tech skills, but I'm not strictly in IT anymore. A much better situation all around though.

Agreed. When I'm paying under $2 per gallon for premium, my first thought is "shit, this can't be good for the economy."

Congrats on the new job OP. Glad to hear it all worked out

It's crazy how wide stretched it is. People just don't understand.

State budgets, steel industry, housing/apartments, IT, etc etc etc....it all hinges on a good energy industry. At least around here and in your 'energy' states

Your fear is mine. I'm so oil oriented and I don't want to do anything else but if oil doesnt get better.. I have no idea

Yup. I'm going to have to go into the auto industry (sell cars for a little bit and try to move into the F&I department) or maybe into the apartment industry as my wife is a Manager for a large company. Who knows. There is literally NOTHING here in Oklahoma City though. It'd be much easier with no kids, no house, etc, but what you have all those things it's incredibly hard to just pack up and move. I had a large company in Dallas interested in me being a GeoTech for them, but it was only a 6-month contract type position with the possibility of being extended to full time. Also the possibility of it NOT being extended and I'd be back to square one again. Not worth the risk.

I have a position available (sales for awhile and then move into the F&I department) for a larger GMC/Buick dealer so I might take that for awhile. It's really freaking me out being on a small salary + commission (so technically just commission) based income. With a house, kid, etc..that's scary. Lets hope something comes around for myself and everyone else in this spot soon. I've love to do environmental work, for the state or whoever, but these state jobs are so sketchy with their hiring and they take months and months. I had to take a 2 hour test, phone interview, in person interview w/ panel of 3 people and afterwards write a 2-3 page essay in under 30 minutes. I wasn't hired after that and there were still more interviews. INSANE!! I haven't wrote an essay in 6-7 years haha. You'd think they'd love to have a geologist w/ 6 years of experience instead of someone right out of college, but I guess not. I'm sure there's some 'stuff' that goes on behind closed doors.
