SS and WS6 would have a hard time keeping a Mach1 at bay on anything but a 1/4mi strip.

Laughable. You're ****ing clueless.

SN95 interior is easily two generations ahead of the ****ery GM produced in both the C5 vettes and Fbody.

See above.

Sorry but aside from straight line acceleration, a Fbody is half the car a SN95/NE is. Heres how I know, if it wasnt for the LS motor, NOBODY WOULD ****ING BUY THEM.

Damn right you're sorry. BTW...the LT1 4th gens outnumber the LS1 cars 2:1.

If you never grenaded the rear you weren't beating on it very hard. They were made of glass.

I was beating it, trust me. Mine was an auto, though.

It's pretty well known the rear ends are decent for the automatic LT1/LS1 cars. With a six speed though...

The automatics didn't shock the driveline as bad as a manual could. Now stalled on slicks and constantly doing digs is a completely different story. Haha

I'm not understanding all these comments about the F-body not being a good handling car. GM did a test on their own proving grounds back in 2001 and the Camaro lapped faster than the C5. I think it may have been given comparable tires to the C5 for that test. Someone might be able to dig up the link to that, I dont have it handy anymore.

Regardless, the F-body had a true separate upper and lower control arm front suspension and a torque arm rear suspension. BY DESIGN it is a superior handling platform compared to an SN95 Mustang. Stock for stock I believe it proved to be a better handling car, but it certainly has proven to be a great handling car when the modifications start as F-body's have won countless times on racing circuits.

And dont forget how light the F-body's were in base or "stripper" form. I once owned a 02' Camaro Z28 with hardtop and crank windows. It weighed 3,380 lbs. with full interior and 3/4 tank of gas. It did have some modifications (springs, Koni's, subframe connectors, front sway bar, and after market torque arm) but it routinely passed some fast cars on track, including some C5 Z06's, and was so predictable and controllable at the limit. My 03' Cobra with springs, shocks, bushings, and subframe connectors does not hold a frickin candle to my 02' Camaro when it comes to handling characteristics.

The hard parts in the MT82 are actually pretty damn good and the gears are bigger than the gears in a T56. The shift pads, forks and stops are the weak link in the box. You can shift it fast as long as you use a little finesse and do not pound it like a caveman. The other problem is the craptastic clutch assembly and shifter. All of these short comings can be addressed, just takes a little money.

god if only the general public knew this. Post of the year.

Yea, those were the days!

The opti was a piss poor design. Mine never went out. I did change it as a preventative measure when I was in there doing some other stuff, though. I was beating it, trust me. Mine was an auto, though.

Ah the LT1 F-Body. That was the first real car I owned. First car I did real wrenching on as well. I changed out my optispark because it was shot when I bought the car, so since you have to take the whole front end off of the motor off to get to it I changed the water pump as well. Plugs were a PITA on that car until I did them on a Viper v10 and had to remove the inktake manifold. Now my truck is the biggest pain as far was plug wire changes go.

I beat the hell out of that car and it was rock solid, sold it at 180k as it was burning oil stupid fast. It was well past the time for a rebuild.

This article shoots down the handling argument here. This is also a base SS versus an IRS Cobra. My SS back in 05 when I had it was an 02 SLP SS which had the Bilstein Ultra Performance package which was Bilstein shocks with matched Eibach springs with bigger sway bars from the factory. It also had the 345hp package all available as factory options. Handled incredible. I've owned both platforms within 2 days of each other. Both interiors are equally shitty.

^ A couple of pages back, black99lightnin says that the new mustangs today have crappy interior compared to the terminator, or was he talking about seats.

? Never been in a new Mustang, so I can't comment. I know the Terminator seats are better than any S197 seats sans the Recaros. Maybe that is what you're thinking of.

Yep, just went to the entire thread to make sure. Wasn't me sweetheart.

Sounds like handling wise the Camaro loses.

article said:
Our initial impressions, and all the test numbers outlined above, were telling us "the Camaro is the better musclecar, but the Mustang is the better sports car." Lots of road time, particularly the S-curve kind, confirmed it.

article said:
.

The Camaro turns in quicker than the Mustang, but if you don't get it right, there's a lot of correcting involved.

Neither car offers enough steering feel in our opinion, but the Mustang is the better of the two.

article said:
Working the Camaro through the corners is like shooting a .44 Magnum: Grip, aim, pucker, then fire. The best way through the corners is to let the engine do its thing in the straight parts, then brake hard, carry as much speed as you can through a corner without seeing ghosts, then power out. And we do mean power out: The SS' cannon-like grunt really helps launch the car out of corners, gear choice be damned.

The Cobra wants you to take a more classic sports-car line: Carry speed smoothly into the corner, nail a perfect apex, and feed in the power. There's a lot less correction required, and the IRS-equipped Mustang is much more neutral overall. It's got less torque to fire you out of a turn, but lots of revs and a smooth, ramp-like powerband.

article said:
Should you get the tail out, the SVT's progressive handling nature and linear steering allow you to either bring it back in with a quick flick of the wheel or just hang it out there, sprint-car style, maintaining control until you've had enough. The Cobra's IRS also allows it to swallow up bumps that easily upset the SS' applecart.

article said:
Real-world braking isn't much different from our test-track results: Both are good stoppers, but the Mustang is easier to modulate and serves up less front-end dive than the SS

New edge handles considerably better than the SN95. Handling feel is subjective to each driver. Numbers don't lie and they are extremely close. Regardless of how this particular tester "feels" they handle, they put up almost identical numbers handling wise. With any of the available suspension packages on the SS not so much.

You said they handled like shit and according to the objective numbers it was close to the IRS cobra and far outperformed the solid rear SN95 cars. Neither will set the world on fire but they are not worlds apart as you were claiming.

The SS cars were available in many different flavors with several packages involving suspension, intake, exhaust, wheels, tires etc...upgrades. The Cobra has always been a 1 size fits all model

I think you're mistaken. I don't recall much variation at all with the SS/WS6 cars aside from one additional "performance" package and some different exhaust tips/mufflers.

SLP offered some upgrades. 2 different exhausts, an intake (which combined bumped hp 20 to 345), a Bilstein or 1LE suspension, an Auburn differential, better BFG tires, and the rest was cosmetic stuff.

Wasn't that proven time and again to just be snake oil because all the F-body V8s had the same engine from the Corvette but just "rated" lower? The SLP packages added nothing but weight and money to the cars. The base Z28 guys were dusting off SSes left and right in the real world. At best, it was a driver's race between the two. I remember all those arguments and hype all too well. The bad ol' days of cardom. The LS boys were as smug back then as the GTR boys are today, and the dickriders abounded like crazy! There were so many so-called Mustang fans/owners caping for LS boys on Mustang forums it was downright shameful.

The stripper Z28 and even better, the Formula (which I believe was the lightest of all the Fbodies), were the fastest simply due to their weight advantage. I don't think the SLP options only added weight, but those cars were heavier.

not at my post...

shhhhhhhh!... I don't want them to know, its ridiculous what you can buy a working pullout MT82 for :D

You can now get bronze fork pads reasonably priced at 40 a pair and sometimes cheaper on ebay (8 needed).
