Will a shorter tire be quick/faster on a A6 5.0?

1st, I don't care about what the shorter tire will look like. This strictly is about making my soon to be CJ intake, cat deletes, A6, 3:15 geared, AED tuned, equipped car down the 1/4 mile quicker at the drag strip. Stock tires are like 27.3" tall. Looking at the possibility of some BFG 295/35/18 drag radials which are right at 26" tall. Will the shorter tire hurt of help 1/4 mile times?

As long as you can make it to the finish line without it having to shift into 4th gear you'll be faster. If it makes that 4th gear shift it will slow you down. I have an auto with 3.15 gears also, but run a 28"tall tire...I go through the traps at 7350 RPM in third gear, so the shorter tire on my car would probably slow me down due to another gear change

Your 4th is 1.1 so it shouldn't slow you down. I cross in 4th at 126 - 128 on a 3.15 gear.

But OP, a shorter tire will help you out. Anything that is a 26" is fine.

Also, A 295/35/18 is a 26.13 tall tire if you want to be more in depth. I run a 285/40/18 which is a 26.66" and has treated me well.

Personally I'd rather go through the traps at 7300-7400 in 3rd gear rather than 6600-6700 in 4th.....especially with that CJ Intake

I ran 26" drag radials on mine last year (255/50-16s). They were perfect with my Boss manifold to cross the stripe in 3rd at 7400-7500 rpm at around 118-119mph...your CJ should be similar.

Make sure that you get a tune for that manifold that shifts at 7500-7600 and you will be golden. Mike Rousch at Mid Atlantic Performance has treated me (and others) very well for tuning (he also has a CJ manifold on his own personal car with 3.15 gears and 26" tires). Just one option for you!

EDIT: Just saw that you already have AED tuning your car...another great option!

All things being equal you might experience some traction loss as you will light the shorter tire up easier.
