So after a few months... yes a few months of waiting for my buddy to get my wheels done (& receiving that picture that made them look amazing). I went to his place of work to pick up three of the wheels, the fourth was nearing completion. To my disappointment, one wheel looked amazing... the other two looked like he had sprayed the bentley blue on the rim blindfolded... Now these were chrome wheels, he assured me that he had prepped them properly before spraying. WRONG! As soon as I took them to the tire place to have tires mounted, the area around the center cap flaked off (and continued to flake off when I scraped it with my fingernail). I was furious, not only did I wait forever for my wheels to get done, but they were done half-assed. So I decided... no more cheapo jobs for me.
Here are two pics, the first is of the wheels on the car (now the wheels are candypainted, so in this light they look identical to sonic blue, in some light it looks more "purple-ish") The second pic shows where the powder flaked off due to improper prep
So determined to get my wheels done professionally to my liking, I set out to find a reputable facility in my area to do the work for me. I live near Ann Arbor in southeast Michigan, and most of the powdercoating facilities (with not so good reviews) are located near Detroit, MI.
I finally found an establishment by the name of Beans Best llc http://beansbestrestoration.com/. I called and spoke to Julian, who was very friendly and informative on the phone (unlike most of the shop owners I had spoken to earlier in the day). Although most of the shops I had spoken with were very weary about stripping the old powdercoat finish and sandblasting chrome wheels, Julian appeared very confident in his abilities to finish my wheels to my liking.
I went to go visit him yesterday to check out some of his work and his facility before dropping off my wheels as I had requested the day before. I was impressed with the quality of his work and a few of the projects he had displayed in his shop. He was also very straightforward on the processes he would be taking to fix my wheels and showing me his facility - not to mention the fair pricing that I'm receiving. I'm going to drop off my wheels (again for powdercoating) and he is going to strip the old coating off, blast them with fine media, and then powder coat them with my choice of colors. I will continue to update this thread with pictures as I was promised step-by-step progress pictures to keep for my records.
Stay tuned!
