Weird black gunk - advice needed

Looking for a little guidance. While upgrading my suspension I noticed some weird black gunk in the transmission tunnel right above the driveshaft near the rear of the car. Below are some pics.

Anybody seen this stuff on their car before? It has a paste like consistency and it looks like it's melting onto the frontmost part of my over the axle pipes. I assume it would be safe to wipe it all off but does anyone know what the hell this stuff is?

That would be my guess. Looks like grease from the CV joint.

Thanks gentlemen, I'll get under there and take a look. Just another reason to get an aluminum one piece.
