I tried that technique and ended up breaking the mounts on the motor. That's why I ended up using the tool.When I installed these, I didn't need a dental pick. I moved the mirror glass facing the driver as far as possible and I was able to see the back part of the mirror. And then I just used constant pressure and the glass popped right off. Made this a fairly easily install. I might have read someone using this technique as well.
