I've read 18" is the min target distance in some manuevers...certainly within 2 feet for sure...which is nuts. The impossible proximity of many shots of the Thunderbirds and Blue Angels is due to the distance compressive effects of telephoto lens. Still it takes Big Brass Ones and A LOT of Talent to do what they do.

Great shots. I'm lucky enough to work in Downtown Chicago and we got to see most of them practicing before the show as they flew right over our heads.
