So the car goes back Wednesday for the special ordered parts to be put on. I get a call. "We put the parts on, road tested it, and it's still making noises. So, we took the tranny back out and I'm having a specialist look at it". Friday, I get another call. "We have found the source of the problem. The main input shaft/input shaft bearing have failed. I have to call Ford to find out what they want me to do. Either they will tell me to fix it or replace the entire transmission. I'll be calling you Monday". And so it goes...
I didn't have a chance to ask what causes input shaft bearing fail. So-WTF??? I run a paltry Lightening pulley and Borla catback and have failing transmission parts(and a T56 at that) while Kenne Bell guys are having only traction problems? To tell you the truth, I'm a bit miffed right now. Is this something that can happen again? My warrenty expires next June and I will NOT be stuck with a $2400 bill to replace it again. Right now I'm just very upset about this whole thing. I've tolerate lots in relation to this car, but this just tosses me over the edge. Now I know that Tremec built the tranny so technically they are responsible, but still...
I'll just have to wait until Monday.

Well if it goes again, or goes for anyone who doesnt have a warrenty, I would think that you can just replace the input shaft and bearing, no?

The noise I originally had was a squeak that sounded like a bad throw out bearing. Squeak in neutral. Push in the clutch, squeak goes away. I don't know what kind of noise the dealer heard as I didn't have enough time to talk to him. I'll learn more Monday.

I had my T56 replaced by tremec because the TOB sawed through the input shaft sleeve. Well 3 months later I hear the TOB squeal again. Take it in and it turns out it is what you are talking about. I think they called it a pilot bearing or something like that. Anyway, they replaced it and the noise is gone.

There have been a number of issues with this transmission. And many on cars with no mods. Most have been fixed by dealers but it's a hassle none the less. They could have done a lot better with this tranny to have made the drivetrain more reliable and less noisy. But costs were cut to keep the price down. Let us know how you make out.

Talked to the dealer today. They were instructed to replace the mainshaft bearing and were in the process of doing so when I called. Turns out the throw out bearing and retainer sleeve were fine. But when the specialist took the tranny apart to check the mainshaft bearing, it showed significant wear. I expressed my concern about this situation possibly happening again. The service writer only said that Tremec told them there have been problems with this part and that it is being replaced with updated parts. I should get the car back tomorrow as a replacement bearing was available somewhere down the street(huh??), but it will be a few days before I can take the time to stop buy and pick it up maybe. He says problem solved, but we'll see. Nothing was said about anything else(including the Pro 5.0 shifter) so I'm assuming everything else from the flywheel back is aok. I flippin' forgot to have them check those parts as well as the clutch itself while the tranny was out, but no matter. I'll let ya'll know what it sounds like when I pick it up. I'm wondering if this worn bearing may have caused some of the clunking I had been hearing.
And FYI-I could be wrong-the pilot bearing holds the end of the mainshaft square in the flywheel. The bearing that went bad here is called a mainshaft bearing. It resides in a plate bolted between the bellhousing and the main gearbox and supports the main input shaft. Seems this frontal plate is something a tad unique to Tremec.
