Is it illegal for someone to go through your trash to pick out the cans and bottles? I was home today and I saw a old Vietnamese couple going through everyones trash. I know they scored with my trash cause I threw away about 3 24 packs of corona. The real kicker is that they were rolling in an old toyota pickup that was packed with bottles and cans. I got the plate number so I can call the local PD. Just wanted some info about the subject before I do.

If the bottles and cans are in a recycling container, they are property of the municipality once you place them at the curb, hence these people are actually stealing them. If they are picking them from your trash, you have abandoned that property, and they can possess that as long as their doing so doesnt violate another law.

The exception would be if they had to come onto your property to do so. If you place your trash on the public curb it is free game for anyone, including those looking for more dangerous things than bottles (read cc info, ss#s, homemade porn, ect).

Ya, I have to agree w/ everyone else. When you throw stuff away its free game.

When I'm doing investigations on people I go through their trash. You wouldn't believe what people throw away.

The instant that the city recycling container is moved to the city street the contents become the property of the city. If someone removes anything from a city owned recycling container once it has been moved from your property to the curb (curb = city property) it can be considered theft from the city and the person taking the recyclables can be cited. Will they be? it's up to you local police dept. and city attorney.

Why do you really care? They are going to take them to a recycling center just like the city will but they will make a little money in the process. If they aren't in your front lawn leave them alone, theres alot worse things to get angry about.

Honestly its too old bad vietnamese people in old toyota trucks have to recycle for lazy Americans.

I guess the rising price of all things from the ground hasnt affected everyone yet.

Where I live folks use blue bags to recycle junk instead of bins and it is illegal to take anything from the garbage unless the person gets a sanitation permit from the city once a year, then "gleaning" is legal and I think the recyclables in the bags may be fair play.

People stealing from the recycling, means that the municipality collects less money for the same costs required to pick up the recycling. Therefore, they have experienced a loss and will need to pass it along to you.

The City of Orlando's waste manager in charge of recycling stated that recycling theft cost the city over $35,000 last year.

So what happens when you take the bottle/cans to recycling center yourself and get your money? Wouldn't that technically be a "loss" for the city? My opinion is leave them alone. If they are digging through the recyclables and not making a mess then let them be. No harm no foul.

Yet that isnt the case, people who recycle at their homes aren't bringing their bottles/cans to the center. The need for recycling is based on the fact that people tend not to do such and the municipality takes on that responsibility. There are costs associated with that responsibility that are borne by the tax payers. If a few individual people dont recycle or handle their recycling by themselves that is usually calculated into their cost per household. But if someone artificially changes that calculation by now making everyone in a particular neighborhood a non-recycler, that is problematic.

i throw trash for a living and everything is game..... once u put out as trash thats what it is and they cant do anything about it.... same with the recycling you pay for that service to the company picking it up, its not like there doing it fot free knowing there gonna get paid at the recycling center later... its still in some sense free game, but at the same time if they were rolling around picking up everyones bins might be a different story and could get a ticket theres a fine line about that.... recycling u make money on so they might care a bit and the other (trash) u pay for at the dump so no one cares

That may be your lay-opinion, but that is not accurate. Garbage is meant to be abandoned and would be free game as long the person going through such isnt violating another law. In contrast, recycling is NOT abandoned, it is meant to taken by the party supplying the bins or contracted to do the pick ups. Whether it is the municipality or a private contractor picking up the recycling and bringing it to the center, it makes no difference. Both parties calculate their costs based on being able to recover a certain amount of money from the recycling center, which offsets their hard costs. Therefore, since recycling isnt abandoned, it is not free game.

Round here if you put and an old stove or washing machine or anything that is "scrap metal" curbside its gone within about 10-20 minutes dont matter of you are in the po' folks neighborhood or the rich folks neighborhood. The scrappers know the garbage routes and pick them clean the night before.
Its really fine because the trash collectors can take big stuff like those items I mentioned, the fact that some poor old scrappers makes a little money is ok too, basically Sanford and Son types.

scrapers make a killing out there... when im out there i find tons of wire, copper etc.... make and xtra 200-400 dollars every few months from it not to bad for a small amount of shit..

fordsvtfan-- so would it be wrong when another company comes around and picks up a stop thats not theres... they are doing the same job, but alot of people out here will just sweep the area and pick up everything out becuase they dont know the route... dont get me wrong its not right, but its also sad to have to run around and dig in people trash, but if that what u need to do to make ends meet. im not gonna hate unless u destroy my trash and make a mess..

i think it matters mostly in areas which provide recycling pickup free of charge. where i live they pick up recycling and lawn waste free of charge. they take the money from the recycling and pay for programs, and they use the yard waste for compost for the city. but then again i live in a city of aging hippie douches.

I say let the people go through the trash if they won't. What's the problem? It's TRASH and they're not bothering me and they're not on my property.
