I think what you are referring to is called a rotary valve. Koenigsegg uses "free valve" which uses traditional valves that are opened and closed by an electric actuator. This gives the ECM complete control over valve events and makes possible some very cool things with an internal combustion engine.
How about no valves? No cams? No spark plugs? No timing chain!

Is there anywhere he talks about why he uses 3 piston engine? 3 piston is naturally unbalanced and does not seem like a good fit here. Ford did a number of things to balance their 1L 3cy ecoboost.
