Interesting how people can pick BOTH. Is that so we can choose which parts we want to believe or follow? Or is that because there are a lot of things in it that have been proven false by science and people are adjusting accordingly?

Ever read Aesop's Fables? It's easy to discern that aren't absolute fact, but they carry a very powerful message, same as many of the parables and stories told in the Bible. It is my belief that much of the Bible is more about the message than the absolute fact behind it, and that it's an excellent and well-written source of inspiration, that just may carry some historical fact, but IMO it's just not one or the other.

Grace,

Not gonna debate. We're not going to change each other's minds. I was just answering 71's question, and my feelings on the OP's original question.

"Dribble" though. ouch. My feeling is a bit hurt. ;)

well wipe your mouth once in awhile and no one would see your "dribble" LOL! actually the word is DRIVEL. but I could be mistranslating which would not be a mistake. it's just that his english is so rich in meaning and can mean several different things and without fully knowing his intent in using the word "dribble" instead of the preferred word "drivel" ,I will leave it to others to intrepet until we get a concordance, in the original english, of the svtp "bible'.

In fairness His Grace did apologize for it and I think it was meant to be taken more in tongue and cheek.

that is one interpretation certainly. however I don't think it is the correct one. my understanding of the eventually to be ancient english is that dribble would be the incorrect use of the word given the context it was used in. of course historians may come up with something different once the entire true context of each word is analyized and it is shown that it wasn't just a simple mistake in word usage or interpretation. but then who will be there to say it was a mistake? no one, because no one translating it would have actually been there to witness the entire situation so saying who is right and who is wrong is really not going to be possible.

The English language may become ancient, but I'm sure there will be people that will still study the ancient English language and be able to point out to people what the meanings were in the ancient English language. A written record will still exist somewhere, especially with the data storing capabilities we have today. And no matter how much time passes, people would still be able to study what words in the "ancient english" language actually meant, regardless if they lived in our period of time or not. Written historical evidence is a bitch.

Agree, it's "drivel." I "dribble" when playing hoops, and sometimes when I fall asleep in my lazyboy. Get it right, Grace. :rolling:

A University professor at a well known institution of higher learning challenged his students with this question. "Did God create everything that exists?"

A student bravely replied, "Yes he did!"

"God created everything?" The professor asked.

"Yes sir, he certainly did," the student replied.

The professor answered, "If God created everything; then God created evil. And, since evil exists, and according to the principal that our works define who we are, then we can assume God is evil."

The student became quiet and did not respond to the professor's hypothetical definition. The professor, quite pleased with himself, boasted to the students that he had proven once more that the Christian faith was a myth.

Another student raised his hand and said, "May I ask you a question, professor?"

"Of course", replied the professor.

The student stood up and asked, "Professor; does cold exist?"

"What kind of question is this? Of course it exists. Have you never been cold?"

The other students snickered at the young man's question. The young man replied, "In fact sir, cold does not exist. According to the laws of physics, what we consider cold is in reality the absence of heat.
Everybody or object is susceptible to study when it has or transmits energy, and heat is what makes a body or matter have or transmit energy. Absolute zero (-460 F) is the total absence of heat; and all matter becomes inert and incapable of reaction at that temperature. Cold does not exist. We have created this word to describe how we feel if we have no heat."

The student continued, "Professor, does darkness exist?"

The professor responded, "Of course it does."

The student replied, "Once again you are wrong sir, darkness does not exist either. Darkness is in reality the absence of light. Light we can study, but not darkness. In fact, we can use Newton's prism to break white light into many colors and study the various wavelengths of each color. You cannot measure darkness. A simple ray of light can break into a world of darkness and illuminate it. How can you know how dark a certain space is? You measure the amount of light present. Isn't this correct? Darkness is a term used by man to describe what happens when there is no light present."

Finally the young man asked the professor, "Sir, does evil exist?"

Now uncertain, the professor responded, "Of course, as I have already said. We see it everyday. It is in the daily examples of man's inhumanity to man. It is in the multitude of crime and violence everywhere in the world. These manifestations are nothing else but evil.

To this the student replied, "Evil does not exist, sir, or at least it does not exist unto itself. Evil is simply the absence of God. It is just like darkness and cold, a word that man has created to describe the absence of God. God did not create evil. Evil is the result of what happens when man does not have God's love present in his heart. It's like the cold that comes when there is no heat, or the darkness that comes when there is no light."

The professor sat down.

i wish you well too, and i have always thought you are one of the more intelligent "believers" on this board. and, at least none of your quotes appear in wurd2's thread of stupid statements...

there is only one word that connects the others you mention, and that word is evidence. evidence, and the ability to study it, measure it, and record it independently, is imo what makes a claim have any merit. my mind is very open, but i am also very skeptical.

faith and belief are subjective and depend too much on one's personal experience and hope.

so i would love to hear any of the prophecies you mention, but for me to believe that they reveal themselves in the bible and then later unfold in history, they would have to be of a non-self-fulfilling variety. for example, i would consider the formation of israel, by people who use the bible as a starting point, to be self-fulfilling. it would be circular logic to say that the bible "predicted" it.

but cheers to you "his grace", i always enjoy these religious discussions

:)
