Secondly, how do you recharge your electric vehicle when half the grid is down in California to prevent already occurring wildfires from spreading more? You can’t recharge with no electricity source (which ironically is generated by coal in most cases and some windmill and hydrostatic dams). I can see the headline in the LA Times now. “Family of 5 dead from wildfires because electric car couldn’t charge”
[...]

How do you think the eletric pumps at the gas station is powered?

Tomorrow is Tesla's "Battery Day" and at least some answers will come of it. Probably just an announcement of lower KWH per dollar cost to produce batteries, but maybe some insight on what will replace lithium ion.

If you're looking for the light reading, go check out GM's Ultium battery tech co-developed with LG Chem. Some good SAE articles. Pretty impressive technology, with some pretty cool "future-proof" engineering. Current battery chemistry reduces cobalt by as much as 70% vs. current Li ion, with costs below the important $100/kWh mark.

Can’t be tesla is the only company that can do that despite spending no money on r&d.

It's pretty clear who on here has never worked for a high tech engineering and manufacturing company. Do you guys really think you can conceive of new technology and roll it our to the public that afternoon?

I watched the video feed of the battery day. It's pretty interesting how they're revolutionizing the process of battery production AND incorporating the batteries themselves into the design of the car all without any R&D.

If anyone is interested in either castings or batteries, it's worth watching the event online. It was actually pretty funny to see all the attendees in person parked in front of him like a drive in movie. Clearly he's an innovator and not a public speaker though.

ANY company involved with EV batteries is chasing the density silver bullet.
