Part three in our series of shop tours [TMI Tour / McLeod Tour] from the aftermath of SEMA 2012 finds us at the manufacturing facility of True Forged Wheels. Steve@TF personally took us on the tour and explained the processes involved in producing what many consider some of the best wheels available in the Mustang market. Starting with billet aluminum blanks the guys at True forged hue, polish, finish, and weld their custom wheels to the customer's exact specifications. From a Fox-Body to a Trinity powered SVT GT500 True Forged can build you a custom set of wheels to tuck the perfect set of tires for your car precisely in your wheel-wells. Follow along as we show you how TF goes about their billet artistry:

This is where it all begins, a solid aluminum billet.

True Forged keeps plenty of them in stock.

From these TF can build any of their classic designs.

From there it's time for a trip to the machining center.

True_Forged_Shop_Tours_001.jpg

This machine starts the machining process.

True_Forged_Shop_Tours_002.jpg

Here you can see that the hub face has been machined.

True_Forged_Shop_Tours_003.jpg

Time to cut some spokes.

True_Forged_Shop_Tours_004.jpg

This massive lathe cuts the hubs.

True_Forged_Shop_Tours_035.jpg

It turns out plenty of chips.

True_Forged_Shop_Tours_036.jpg

A lot of work goes into making a set of True Forged Wheels.

True_Forged_Shop_Tours_005.jpg

Wheels in various stages of assembly.

True_Forged_Shop_Tours_030.jpg

This machine applies a bit of heat to the hoop so it can expand just enough for the center section to drop in.

True_Forged_Shop_Tours_007.jpg

Speaking of center sections, here's a freshly machined and polished set.

True_Forged_Shop_Tours_008.jpg

True Forged has the option to make pretty much any size wheel you would want for a Mustang.

True_Forged_Shop_Tours_009.jpg

To do that they have to keep a lot of different hoops in stock.

True_Forged_Shop_Tours_010.jpg

They can even do completely custom widths.

True_Forged_Shop_Tours_011.jpg

True Forged's options are nearly limitless.

True_Forged_Shop_Tours_039.jpg

The width ordered by this customer required this hoop be custom narrowed.

True_Forged_Shop_Tours_012.jpg

Precision welding is a key to a premium wheel.

True_Forged_Shop_Tours_013.jpg

Did I mention that they keep a lot of hoops in stock?

True_Forged_Shop_Tours_014.jpg

These wheels are finished and being packaged up to be sent to an SVTP member.

True_Forged_Shop_Tours_015.jpg

The powder coated finish looked great.

True_Forged_Shop_Tours_016.jpg

Another custom set of TF wheels being assembled.

True_Forged_Shop_Tours_017.jpg

Sections of three piece wheels.

True_Forged_Shop_Tours_018.jpg

Ever wonder how the assembly parting line on a three piece wheel is sealed?

True_Forged_Shop_Tours_024.jpg

Here you can see how silicone sealant is applies to the seam.

True_Forged_Shop_Tours_019.jpg

After a bit of curing time this sealant will prevent any loss of air pressure.

True_Forged_Shop_Tours_025.jpg

These bolts hold the three separate sections together.

True_Forged_Shop_Tours_020.jpg

The quality of a True Forged wheel is simply astounding.

True_Forged_Shop_Tours_022.jpg

Everything is machined and finished to a level of precision that is extremely impressive.

True_Forged_Shop_Tours_023.jpg

When I first saw the red bolts on these wheels I had my doubts about them.

True_Forged_Shop_Tours_026.jpg

However, when combined with the red-filed lettering of the TF center cap I have to admit that the total package looks pretty good.

True_Forged_Shop_Tours_027.jpg

Black chrome lip + black center + satin rear hoop + red trim = a great looking wheel.

True_Forged_Shop_Tours_028.jpg

The red filled lettering looks great, and the black finish is immaculate.

True_Forged_Shop_Tours_029.jpg

This facility also machines wheels for other brands.

True_Forged_Shop_Tours_034.jpg

These fully machined centers are on their way out to be powder coated.

True_Forged_Shop_Tours_037.jpg

I'm told that they too are destined to be on an SVTP member's Mustang.

True_Forged_Shop_Tours_038.jpg

On the road with Wicket once again. See you at the next shop.

I love their Wheels, but I'd love for them to copy the Ford 2013/14 GT500 Base model Wheels...In Aluminum? Damn! Polished! That would be nice. I'll spend the money on those . Everyone pretty much loves the base wheels.....that should be their next model!

I too will also own a set someday.

On a side note Steve needs to get on his guys about wearing the safety glasses while grinding. Wearing them on the forehead does not count.

he's not grinding. he's actually just doing a final clean up on that polished wheel. lightly buffing any fine scratches or fingerprints/whatever that get on there when theyre assembled/welded. its so minimal that it doesnt really even produce anything in the air. now the polishing room, those guys look like they're chimney sweeps lol. theyre covered up from head to toe with breathing masks and goggles. polishing is nasty work

I remember the nasty ass smell from the factory when Steve took me on the tour. Lol.

yeah it does smell but you get used to it lol
