After input from people on here, along with a few other forums I'm on, on buying a cheap track car to beat up on, and something that you can actually "learn" to drive with, I posted a feeler ad for the CTS-V last week to stir up some interest, and had a buyer within a day.

I searched everywhere for a track prepped Miata that was in somewhat decent condition body-wise, engine was stock, but still had some suspension and safety mods already done that I didnt have to worry about, and around $5k. I was also looking for something with a few creature comforts where I could drive to and from the events with (a/c, p/s, radio) and was streetable. Most of the stuff I found was either a full-out race car that was out of my budget, a track-prepped street car with a bunch of engine mods (supercharger, turbo), or a bone stock car.

I finally came across a car that was caged, had seats, harnesses, and suspension, but stock engine, trans, p/s, a/c, radio, etc., and was in my budget. Called up the owner, whittled him down on the price, bought a plane ticket to CT, and drove it back last Thursday/Friday. Here's the ad:

1990 Miata Track Car Full Cage For Sale

So far, I have changed a few things out....

SPAL fans w/ override switch in passenger compartment (quick cooldown when idling in pits)
Sparco Evo 2 Plus seat (Sparco Sprint V didnt fit me well)
Schroth Profi II 6 pt HANS compatable harness (drivers side - got rid of 4 point G-Force harness car came with)
RCI 5 point harness (passenger side - to replace the 4 point)
MOMO Suede 320mm steering wheel (OMP wheel a bit too big for me)
New Quick Release (current quick release has a little play in it)
Dunlop Star Spec tires (previous owner put on cheap G-Force sports to get me home in the rain, 1200 miles. Shaved RA-1s werent going to cut it)
FlyinMiata Springs and bumpstops (better/stiffer than the crappy Racing Beats in there, which are sagging)

Also picked up all new fluids for everything, a bunch of roll bar padding, and repainted the interior and roll cage white (was a light gray before)

Here are some pics:

Another one gets hooked. Was it washing my car that got you started? LOL
You're gonna have lots of fun with that, and not go broke doing it. Congrats.

haha, yes, that was the hook for me! A set of conti scubs cost me $120, and a full set of Carbotech race pads and OEM rotors all around are $350 total. These things are great!

Cool car.
My next track car will likely be a Miata as well.
Been doing some research, and will likely look for a 99-00.

Only problem is that I would need to sell the Mustang first, but then if I dont care for the miata as much... I'll wish I had the mustang back..

OMG, I hate this hobby sometimes... More of a curse than a hobby...

I don't know whether to congratulate you or slap you.

I just can't do a Miata....at this point anyway.

In all seriousness, you'll have a lot of fun with it. I am sure you'll miss the power in a couple years. They you'll have to get a supercharger for it like several of the MA NASA guys have.

What's with the gallon of diesel oil?

My mechanic has already been trying to talk me into a LS1 swap, lol.

If I do anything, it wont be for a year or so. I want to learn to drive on a cheap, reliable car.

CONGRATS!!!

& Where did you grab the scrubs from??? I run the same size tires.

I found these from a guy getting out of racing here locally.

Theres a guy on racingjunk that is selling them for $200 a set and has tons of them; gets them directly from a Grand Am team. still not bad at all.
