They can only do that until your 18th birthday (longer in some situations). After that, it's between you and the government. Otherwise your parents would be able to claim you on their taxes until your 66th birthday.

I have had two. For some reason the feds decided to re-issue me one after they gave me my resident card and they will more than likely give me another card shortly but keep the same number.

I always wondered why active duty are required to use their SSN, and why dependents are required to assume that magical number as their identification (with a -01, -02 tacked on).
