Joining the military is so much more than a job or an education, and it really is what you make out of it.

I was seventeen, fresh out of high school, and utterly bored with life. Once out of boot camp I was going 24/7; I rarely slept. When I woke up on a Friday morning I had no idea what state I would be in come Friday night. Deployments were a blast too; How many people can say they've spent months on a ship?

I'd say do it. Being a Marine is something that's a lot harder to describe than you would ever believe man. Officers get a lot more privacy and privileges than enlisted do. Just listen to your NCO's and Staff NCO's when you get out into the fleet. There's nothing worse than a butterbar who thinks he knows everything. As for the privacy in general, you get used to it. Just take comfort in knowing the other guy is just as uncomfortable as you are.

being deployed on a ship sucks~! life on a ship is shit, at the very best! **** that, i would rather go back to the desert then deploy on another ship~!

i dont get on here much anymore but i saw this and figured i could offer some advise since i joined to become an MP. if you go enlisted there is a 99% chance you wont be an MP. the field is actually divided into MP and Corrections. the DOD has already started the change to a civilian force on most bases in the US, which means less enlisted spots if any. Most of the MP co.'s are made up of FAPs from other units. if you enlist you will more than likely be sent in as a 5831 corrections specialist IE you work in the brig. you wont learn anything about writing tickets, arresting people or anything you think of when you think about police work. you do however learn alot about paying attention to your surroundings, control people and controlling situations which is beneficial to civilan police work. there is no commisioned officer field in the 5831 MOS its all WO's so you wont be able to be an officer there. if you go officer you have a better chance at becoming PMO (police for the base). however like i said they are transitioning to civilian force so there may not be a spot for you. there is another side of the MP field and that is Field MP, they deploy alot, last i heard their rotation was 7 month is country 6 home. my advice, if you want to be in the military do it, do your contract get out and move to civilian police after. i personally wanted to be a Marine, but also wanted to be a police officer later in life. i enlisted into the Marine Corps and my contract is up at the end of the year. I have a family now and decided not to re enlist so i can move home and start my career and an LEO.

Gringo- you have been in a very short amount of time, what you may or may not realize this but there are very few people that live in the barracks that dont share a room, the infantry isnt special.

My brother went to UTA and got a LEO job shortly after. He went to the Police Academy and is now working out of Duncanville. If you would like, PM me and I'll give you his number and he can walk you through what worked for him (He's been doing it now for just under a year so it's all fresh to him, and you guys are around the same age. He's 25)

My suggestion is to look into being a cop and if that doesn't work then go the military route as a back up plan. If being a cop is what you want to do then you should pursue that route first. Don't think the military is the only way you can prepare yourself to be a cop, as you can see it's possible straight out of school.

I'm not knocking the military. I've throughly enjoyed my 9 years in the USAF, but joining the military is what I wanted to do when I got out of high school. All I'm saying is that if your dream is being a LEO then chase that dream.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do and again feel free to PM me if you want some insight into getting a LEO job now.

-Mike
