I'm not sure if these cars are planned for production any time soon or the what the back story behind these cars is. I haven't heard much about them at all so I thought it was kinda cool seeing one. It had Michigan plates on it, but didn't have any testing equipment or zebra print disguise stuff on it that you usually see on cars that manufacturers drive around testing. I grabbed a few crappy cell phone shots of it:

I think I remember hearing that these are supposed to get some excellent mileage, upwards of 60 MPG, though that might have been a diesel version in another country. The guys driving it didn't look older than 19, so maybe they were given this car by Ford like you said? But I agree, I don't see how this is a bad idea on Ford's part. It'll bump up their CAFE MPG average by 2016 giving the company some elbow room to continue producing high-powered cars in the wake of government mandated econoboxes.

Its cars like those that are going to keep Ford going till this slump is over. Cheap, good on gas, can compete with the japs.

Its not a bad looking car for a daily driver that you don't have to worry about some stealing it. I had a 90 civic si hatch that is probably the same size as that car, fit in tight places and got 38mpg and it was just a beater, point a to b.

It will neither hurt nor help Ford imho. Ford is going really well these days because they increased the quality of their cars....not by wasting money trying to develop all these super gas saver miniature crap cars that are never going to catch on in the states.

How much money R&D do you suppose GM wasted on trying to develop things like the Hybrid Tahoes and shit that got a whoping 19 MPG all said and done. Perhaps had they followed Fords example and just perfected the car they were making instead of trying to create new models of crap they would still be standing on their own 2 feet.

As been mentioned, Ford Fiestas are big in the UK. We've had numerous generations of them and they've been sold since the 70s. We like 'em. I almost bought one a few years ago.

They are small, cheap cars. We pay fortunes for insurance so they are good cars for new drivers. With the price of gas over here around $7/gallon depending on the exchange rate, we can't have 5.4l V8s that get 13 miles to the gallon. A very cheap, very fuel-efficient car that's benefits a domestic company - should do well IMO. The Focus was a Euro-spec car that was taken over to the US and did well.

Ford is moving up market a little, by dropping the S badged Focus and Fusion (bottom of the line) bringing the Fiesta helps them keep a car in the low side of the market. Plus the Fiesta is actually a very nice car. This is not the Fiesta from the 90's.

They had one of these at the All Ford Nationals at Carlisle, PA a couple of weeks ago.

I got to drive it around in a parking lot as part of the Ford Drive One program. It was a 5 speed and was a pretty cool car. The Ford rep said they are supposed to be for sale in the US as a 2011 model and they are projecting the base price to be around $11,000.

My brother had one back in the 80's and was hit by a TRAIN in it. Threw him out of the car about 80'. They said if he'd have had his seatbelt on he would've died.

Sorry but just adding to the thread lol.

bad idea on ford's part.

It's the best selling car in Europe year after year with great reviews on top of it all. It's the best thing Ford could be doing right now. You got to balance out all the fun products with economical ones that make sense.

Just look at how well the Yaris and Fit are selling in the US. Now realize the Fiesta is outselling those cars in Europe. With gas prices going up I think you can figure out the rest.

I'll get one when they come out. I've owned a Focus for seven years now, 110,000K & not one bit of trouble with it. Still Love the Cobra, but they are 2 different cars for 2 different uses. There would be no Ford Motor Co. without the other world markets & these type of cars that they produce.

It's a good car all around. They have a little turbo diesel version in Europe that gets 50-60mpg. (I don't see how that is a bad idea) One reason they don't want to bring that version here is because of the gas taxes on diesel vehicles. It's a very good car but I can see why they are hesitant on bringing it here. Check THIS out.
