you can look into a product called "road wrap" its thicker than tape, very sticky and is clear. Wont look amazing on the car but it may protect it. Either that or buy a bra along with painters tape here and there (like along back of rear bumpe behind tire and behind the front tire on the rocker panels and side mirrors/side scoops. Thats most of where the wear comes from.
I'm a fan of the plastidip route. 
Sure hate I didn't see this until today - I live in MS and my bf has an '03 Roush Cobra that needs to be let out on the roads to keep that battery charged up
