We got her (Boots) when she was around 4-5 weeks old, my GF's cousin found her abandoned and I took her, we kept her a little over a year and my GF's grandpa's cat passed away, and he always loved our cat Boots, so I gave her to him. So she now lives with him.

excuse me while I whore this up a bit....

Meet Karma

She was rescued a year and a half ago at 6 months old. They found her and her sister in a ditch somewhere in Va. as babies. She was transported to a high kill shelter in Va and then picked up by One Step Closer Animal Rescue in NJ. She sat there for months but her sister was adopted... no idea why.

Finally my (now) wife and I found her. I called the adoption place to leave a message at 1 am because I was working nights at the time... To my shock one of the employees was still there finishing up some paper work! Further, she told me that Karma had a meeting with another family the day prior... but the family never showed! We scheduled and completed the home visit two days later, during which she terrified my (at the time) 6 year old rescued cat and ran a muck. Perfect fit. LOL. While we were signing the papers, I noticed her birthday was listed as 11/23/12... the day my (now) wife and I started dating... Its funny how things work out sometimes.

She has earned the nicknames of Monster and the Kracken so far...

We support our local no-kill shelter -- they rescue cats from facilities where they'd otherwise be euthanized, and then try to find them homes. Sometimes they get an entire family -- a mama cat and kittens -- and need them to be fostered until the kittens are 8 weeks old and ready for adoption. We've fostered two families so far, and both times we got so attached that some of them stayed on.

Our first family was a mom cat and six kittens. My kids each kept one of the kittens. The second family was the mom and eight (8) kittens - so we called her Kate, and she was so sweet that we kept both mom and two of the kittens. And that's how we ended up with five cats.

Pics to follow.

nice thread. I technically didn't resue them from a shelter but from a craigslist add...lol I have 2 cats. Bullitt is a male orange tabby and Eleanor is a female multicolor (think there is a word for it but forget).

I am thinking of rescueing a dog once i move into my own place. My buddy and his wife rescued both of their big dogs and they are some of the best dogs. Ones a little hinky around the edges if she doesn't know you but still harmless.

My fiancé and I found these two goobers (brother and sister) at a local rescue shelter. Fell in love, and has been hands down the best decision we have ever made. So glad we helped to make a difference in their lives.

The little one is my rescue dog I got about 7yrs ago when he was 3-4ish best dog I could ask for. Very protective, very loyal, puts my german shepherd in place when needed, and great with people/dogs he knows.

But it's definitely the last time I adopt a dog the hassle you go threw here to just rescue a dog is a pain in the butt. I understand why they do it but still annoying.

Found her in the parking lot of a Walmart about a year ago, snapped this pic after getting her home and cleaned up. Awesome cat, I'd be lost without her!

Wasn't my choice at first but I have really grown to love this little bastard. Adopted him about 3 years ago this Spring and he is the best dog I have ever had. "Jordan"

Rescued this little turd about five years ago, awesome kitty for the most part. She has feline asthma and I think she's bipolar but she's okay I guess.

I rescued this pit from the streets about 10 years ago (she was a pup). We put signs out all over the neighborhood for 2 weeks and no one claimed her. She's been a great dog since and I can't imagine life without her.

The next dog was kind of special in that I just lost my german shephard and my wife and I decided it was time for a new dog. We went to a kill shelter to save one and couldn't come to a decision concerning a certain dog. As we were leaving about a mile away a stray dog ran across the street and we both looked at each other and said this is fate. I got out of the car (in a bad part of town mind you) and approached her and much to my disbelief she rolled over (most dogs run away when I try to save them). She was severely underweight, had oil stains, blood, and over a 100 fleas on her. The wife and I looked at each other and knew this was the dog we would be taking home. I felt bad about not getting the dog we saw at the shelter but this dog (we named her Olive because we found her in a Popeyes parking lot) probably didn't have much of a chance of living either considering the condition we found her in.

The weekend we brought her home (sad puppy)

A few weeks later ready to roll! (amazing what a little tlc and food can do).

Olive and Elaine together a few years later (notice how much Olive has plumped up but she deserves it after being starved on the streets).

I'd love to have some of the cool purebreed cats, but I don't think I ever can. Whenever I think about it I think about all the awesome cats there are at shelters and I just have to keep giving them homes. Whenever I have the opportunity to help one I do. About to inherit 2 more cats from my mom rather than see them go to strangers on craigslist, but if I didn't I'd probably be taking in some more this year. 4 is my limit though. Our last one we got from a country agency in Georgia. She was the only one in the cages at a Petsmart and we always go give kitties in there some love if only for a little while. She was by herself and so nice that we called them up and adopted her.

Awesome thread.

Here's my old dog Chula, a German Shepard mix. My dad saw her wandering around his old truck terminal for 2 days in an industrial part of Oakland. He called me and the family up one night before he was heading home and asked if we wanted a dog. We were all a bit reluctant, being that she was a stray and all. She was maybe 2 at the time of getting her. Could definitely tell she was abused. She turned out to be one of the best things to ever happen to us. Sadly we had to put her down about 4 years ago. One of the hardest things I've ever had to do. Still think about her often. Miss you baby. :(

Awesome thread! Great looking animals and stories!

This is Athena. Shes 1.5 year old pit or boxer husky mix.
Her story is interesting i saw her on petfinder after my wife got a very unmanly dog from a friend lol i called and sent the check 4 days later at 4am the transport truck showed up and delivered my best friend. Shes an amazing dog. Glad to see that there are other mutt lovers rescuing/adopting! I had to do it online i knew if i went down to the shelter id never be able to pick one so i just did a quick search, typed in what was looking for and told myself i was adopting whatever pup showed up first on petfinder
Interesting sidenote the kennel i got her from was called 57 house rescue in TN. She was full of woodchips when i got her and wasnt spayed (which i knew) but was told i had to submit proof of spay when i got it done. So i get her fixed and called to get fax # but no answer. Odd. Never called me back nothing. I never got asked any background questions etc. just given the sob story of how her and her bro were abandoned. Anyway i googled them recently and they are alllll over ripoff report. Dogs dying from parvo etc. theyve since changed names. Luckily my pretty girl is perfectly fine.
Anyway.
The pics that mAde me love her instantly

Here's my saved puppy, Cooper. The first pic is soon after getting Cooper and the 2nd is a more recent pic of him. Love him to death. He's caught and subsoquently killed a few armadillos and squirrels in his time already. He also looks much happier to be on the seat in the first pic and I had to set him in the seat for the 2nd picture.

The wife and I have two rescued Dachshunds. One was left in a backyard for two weeks after the family moved away, he survived by eating bugs and dirt. The second one we just got after christmas, he was part of a breeder litter that came down with mange. Luckily the whole litter was turned into a rescue organization instead of just killing them.

The first one, JJ, took about a month to get healthy. When we got him, he was about 5 lbs and approximately 4 years old, he is now 14 lbs and perfectly healthy. The second one, Rico, was treated for the mange before being put up for adoption, he is now perfectly healthy as well.

Great stories and pics, good on everyone for their rescues! We've have rescue cats in the past and they made great pets, but just dogs now as our last cat passed away some time ago. "Willa" is a rescue female bluenose pit, guestimated to be 6-7 years old by our vet, and came from a bad situation - her and 6 other pits were left abandoned and found just in time. She was only 20lbs and skin and bones when humane services got her, I picked her up not long after that, and she's a healthy happy 44lb lap dog now! She's has an amazingly calm termperament and gets along great with our other 3 small dogs, and anyone she meets. She's my new best bud!
