Relocating/shielding air filter

I'm kinda thinking about doing something different on my air filter. I thought about a CAI, but I don't think it'd benefit me much over the current setup. I'd like the BBK and relocate to the fenderwell, but I don't believe the cost is justifiable for the gains. I've saw several with a shield around the filter just to help keep heat from the motor out. Do any of you guys have a suggestion on how to make a heat shield of sorts? Pics would be great as well. And I guess the biggest question, do you guys think it would actually help any? Here's a pic of mine:

it be interesting if you could make a box that fit the contour of the hood when closed and sealed via weather stripping to the hod to keep out unwanted hot air....I have though about this recently and wondered if it would help in the horsepower department at all

I don't know that it'd be a noticeable gain, but colder air has to be better for the engine. I just hit 135k miles, so anything I can do to help out would be nice. You've got my idea though.

That's exactly what I'm looking for! Is there any way to find out if it'd fit or not before I order? I'll be getting one if it'll fit, but no use in wasting money if it won't.

id give it a 90% chance you could make it work, i had a large set up before my bbk and it fit over, just not perfectly, then it just molded itself in that shape

old set up before heat shield, just a homemade one i did.. anyways that heat shild fit over that

OK, well now that I've found what I'm looking for, the question remains, will it actually benefit me any?

it should(in theory), it should block alot of the hot air the fan blows around, and allow more air from the fender well to be sucked in. i wish i would have done a before and after intake temp test.

The stock 97 tune has two tables that retard spark as the Air Charge Temperature heats up: the Spark Retard for ACT table and the Spark Retard for ACT Multiplier table.

The stock Spark Retard for ACT table selects a base amount of spark retard, based solely on the IATs, and then that retard amount is multiplied by the multiplier table that depends on RPM and Load.

Here is the Spark Retard for ACT table:

Code:
ACT Advance
254	-170
200	-114
130	-44
-40	140

The PCM interpolates between those temperature points.

Here is the Spark Retard for ACT Multiplier table:

Code:
Load/RPM 1408 2406 3405 4403 5402 6400
0.796 0.1308 0.0898 0.1796 0.1503 0.1503 0.1503
0.699 0.1308 0.0898 0.1796 0.1503 0.1503 0.1503
0.601 0.1308 0.0800 0.1796 0.1503 0.1503 0.1503
0.402 0.0800 0.0800 0.0800 0.0507 0.0507 0.0507
0.203 0.0800 0.0800 0.0800 0.0507 0.0507 0.0507

So up above 4400 RPM with the higher load you would see during a WOT run, you will see a multiplier of about 0.15. If your IATs are at about 130 degrees, the PCM will pull 44 degrees times 0.15 which is about 7 degrees pulled from the spark advance. At 200 degree IATs, that goes up to 114 degrees times 0.15 which is about 17 degrees of retard.

This keeps your engine safe, but costs you tons of horsepower.

I have zip tied a thermocouple under my hood and driven around on a 70 degree day, and saw under hood temps get up to 155 degrees at stop lights.

This is why it so important to keep the hot underhood air out of the intake pipe. I run an old Volant plastic CAI, that has a sealed air filter box that takes air from the fender. I have even gone so far as to use white duct tape (matches my car) to cover the fender holes such as where the MAF wiring comes through the fender well. Unfortunately, you can't get the Volant any more, but I would go with the ones that put the filter in the fender before I went with one that does not have a sealed box in the engine compartment.
