Please read all the posts, not just a few. I already said we test them and then give them back, although we do have the authority to confiscate them.

Im also in VA and no tickets or problems ever (Knock on wood), but one of my coworkers is a ricer and got a "escort redline" i believe. He claims that there not traceable by va cops true? Just curious haha

Thanks

You know what, the hypocrisy never ceases to amaze me. All you LE guys never speed right? Your 500hp cars never exceed the limit. My brother is a Sec of St officer here in IL, and he routinely speeds when in his personal vehicle. Fortunately for him though, when he gets pulled over, he just flashes his badge and drives on. So save your sanctimonious "don't break the law" bull crap!

So you're calling your own brother a hypocrite and putting words in our mouths?

Not once in this thread did any LEO say they don't exceed the speed limit sometimes. So take your :bs: somewhere else, a piece of your own advice if you will.

Well, to avoid sticking my foot in my own mouth and also to keep from being asked to reveal information I may not want to, all I will say is a manufacturer can make any claim that they want to. I will also say this, I have detected and stopped vehicles that have had VERY expensive radar detectors in them. The ones that I really like finding are the ones that can talk to you, telling you the exact bandwidth of the radar, and the location of the radar unit in relation to the detector. Detectors are very well known for giving drivers a certain level of security while speeding, therefore many do not realize that they have blown the doors of a covert police car. Then after they are paced they wonder why their high dollar detector didn't alert them of my presence.

Thanks for reply sir. Back to old conclusion. Drive speed limit, save fun for track.

I'm a 19+ year Career Firefighter and life long car enthusiast.

Radar detectors help, but are not an end all.

Telling an LEO I'm a Professional FF can help, but is not an end all.

Haven't had a speeding ticket in 20+ years, got a '12 5.0 last year.

Got a speeding ticket shortly afterwards.

Because I was speeding.

LEO was angry, thought I was trying to elude him.

I said I never saw him. He relaxed, gave me a reduced speeding ticket.

Because I was speeding.

I told him I have family in Europe that are LEO's, turns out he does too.

We talked for 1/2 an hour, I shook his hand before driving away.

But I got a ticket.

Because I was speeding.

Need to reduce the chance of getting pulled over ...

Traded in the 5.0 for a new 13 Focus ST. :)

Bel Sti driver is completely undetectable. In Va they can confiscate but only temporarily until the court date. In court they will return your property. It's only a $40 equipment infraction...

I'm a big fan of Escort/Belltronics radar detectors. Right now the Escort 9500 is the only one I would purchase. The GPS registered speed and traffic cams, along with the learned false alerts are awesome. If you're on a budget get a used Belltronics RX-65. My RX 65 gave me about 200,000 miles of ticket free driving. The only time I did get one was when I had it in another vehicle and didn't switch it back. While not full proof a detector lets me know when I've been shot with radar which has also proven very useful.

I also use Waze now on my phone. I just did a long trip from PA to NY and back. The other Wazers tipped me off to 5 different parked police cars. I in turn set alerts for ones that I saw to hopefully prevent other drivers from becoming victims of speed limits set for the lowest common denominator.

Perhaps you should take a moment and familarize yourself with the rules of the forum and the Donut shop specifically.

This thread was destined to fail... Asking police what is the best radar is akin to asking Planned Parenthood what is the best contraceptive. Of course they're going to answer "abstinence".

Planned parenthood would advocate abortion as the best contraceptive, not abstinence... :D

I have a redline and it's worth the money. I have been popped using laser and it will scream, and I instantly shut it down. Correct me if I am wrong but the laser gun (coming from a leo friend) can be tricky to use and requires pin point accuracy (usually the license plate) and can take a few seconds to acquire the speed. In other words, as soon as it goes off I shut it down, and am able to creep by innocent or at least a few clicks over the speed limit which usually a LEO will allow. Ka (used by most city cops) and K (used by most constables that travel through) get picked up really easily. When it goes off and the signal goes above 3 bars, I slow it down. When I go above that, I realize the LEO is on the other side of a hill. I've picked up Ka over 1 mile on the highway. I have gotten snagged once with my redline, but that was because the antenna went to shit. I sent it in for warranty and received a new one.

Of course the only way to defiantly avoid a ticket is not to speed, but I am sorry 55mph on a highway would have made sense back in the 70's when cars were claiming lives at 30mph... Not 2013. But it's the price I pay when I go in to pay my fine when I get snagged for speeding. If it wasn't for the points on the driving record, I'd speed all the time every time without discretion... It's worth the 120-200 dollars here and there every 4-6 months to get to places in a hurry. I have a procrastination problem, and I find myself going places in a hurry. Some people will say I am putting other motorist lives in danger, but I disagree. If I wreck going 75 instead of the posted 65, I personally do not feel 10mph would have made a difference. IMHO speed limits are changed for the benefit of the city; my fines pay for the new roads and projects. If they wanted to, they could limit every car to 75mph, but every city would suffer.

Your LEO friend must ride the short bus. :poke: J/K

We have 3 LIDAR units in my office that we share. They are pinpoint accurate but are not at all difficult to use. If you can shoot a handgun or play a shooter style video game, then you can use a LIDAR unit. Also, it does not "take a few seconds to aquire the speed". When aimed properly, it is almost instantanious in aquiring your speed. By the time your detector goes off, the LIDAR has aquired your speed.

Yea, I guess I should have stated "former" Leo friend. He was a cop several years ago. Either A he did ride the short bus or B technology has changed. But then again I've been lasered twice in the freeway while speeding and managed to slow it down. Not sure if the cop cut me a break or I managed to slow down quick enough. Who knows.

Lol. What some people don't realize is that with LIDAR, we have to write what the screen displays. When the LIDAR trigger is pulled, it will display the speed, and keep displaying the CURRENT speed until te trigge is released. So if vehicle A is first checked at XY speed and slows to XX speed before the officer releases the trigger, we have to write the ticket for XX and not XY. Therefore LIDAR tickets can frequently be several MPH lower that the original speed observed.

I use a Cobra with a GPS feature. It marks where speed traps are and gives a voice warning when you come up on one. I use it more as tool to see patterns of where the cops are patroling speeds on a consistant basis. My tickets were due mostly to careless driving that intentional speeding and it has helped me be more aware and has stopped me from getting any more tickets. I was stopped by a Utah Highway Patrol, not for speeding, last year and he didn't believe me that I use it to help me not speed.

Since no one else has mentioned it, Escort 9500ci is a great unit. I have 3 of them, one in each of my vehicles.

Now that being said, I still got a ticket when I was was speeding. Hell I deserved it. I was doing 95 in a 55. No detector can save you from that kind of egregious violoation. The officer thankfully was a car guy, gave me a ticket for 95 in a 65 so he didn't have to also charge me with reckless. I paid the fines, was spared the points after 6 months of no more tickets, and learned my lesson.

Where the 9500 shines is the highway. I usually drive about 10 over, the detector sniffs the radar well down the road, I slow down, pass the cops, then speed back up. It has paid for itself 2x over.
