Looking at family SUV options. I noticed I could pick up a 2014’ish for around 40k. How are these reliably wise? I also noticed they have a diesel option, which is intriguing. Any owner experiences? Any & all opinions are appreciated.

Guy I worked with bought a used one and when I saw it in the lot I warned him that anything Porsche is not anything close to reliable......he then proceeded to tell me the first week he owned it, the thing was in the shop.

I'll say it once.

Porsche is for enthusiasts who don't mind either paying to keep it running or working on it constantly.

Ferrari is another and when they break, you literally have to wait for the machinist in Italy to get around to making the part after his vacation, etc. (true story).

I kicked around a BMW X series, Jag F Pace and a Macan. I chose a 2018 Explorer Platinum. The Platinum had everything and more than those listed above at a very reasonable price. Is it the best in all catagories....no. However, the Platinum packs a lot of luxuries for the price. The interior is a Lincoln in an Explorer. You should check one out.

If you don't need a 3rd row seat, consider the new '19 Edge ST. It will be over your $40Kish budget, but it might be a good option for what you're wanting.

Porsche is, in my experience, very reliable but regular maintenance is $$$ and if anything breaks it's $$$$$$.

We went Toyota for the family hauler. Maintenance is cheap and basically nothing ever breaks.

If a used land cruiser isn't in the budget check out a Sequoia.

Coming from doing maintenance on them I’d venture to say they’re decent. Most of my customers that own Porsche’s can afford to fix them if they break. Concerning Cayenne’s most of the repairs/maintenance we do seems to be oil changes and brakes. But as stated they are expensive when something goes wrong. Seems like we’ve been flooded with Porsche’s recently. Finished a Boxster with a broke shift cable, spark plugs, and two filters for around $1,300. On the 4.8L V8 Cayenne I have a few that are over 100K miles and seem pretty solid. But they are fixed almost immediately if an issue arises.
As I’ve said numerous times, stay away from Europe. Find something from Japan or US. If you want luxury a Lexus is a good car to get and reliable. My boss is considered euro specialist and he constantly recommends Lexus over many other brands.

Pick your poison.

I got rid of a 2015 BMW 5 series. Decent car with 2 recalls. The nail in the coffin was a four wheel alignment at $215.00. My heart was set on a BMW X3M40i last April until.....

I saw the Explorer Platinum with EB commercial. Never thought I would want an Explorer. I built an Explorer on Ford’s website with every option to see the top MSRP and it was under $60K. The M40i was $73k with a similar build. The clincher......Ford had an incentive program, dealer extra discount, the X-Plan and i deleted the smoker package and rear DVD. Out the door with tax $53,700. Added paint protection film, some additional high end tint, side step accessory.....little over $55k. The other vehicles built to what I would want:

M40i with max discount $68K
x5 with max discount $71k
F-Pace......$66k
Macan .......$77K

What I really like on the Explorer:
EB motor is awesome
Sony stereo loud and crystal clear.
Front seats are really comfy with cooled, heated and massaging options.
Sync 3
A whole list of other standard features.
***I’ve only seen one other Platinum on the road and it was a ‘17 white. My ‘18 is Magnetic and the dealer didn’t have it in stock. It was retrieved from another dealer 400 miles away.

Can’t speak for the Cheyenne, but..

My wife’s last 3 vehicles:

2013 Explorer Sport - totaled

2016 Explorer Platinum - had problems from day 2 with the engine and numerous other things here and there, dealer service was awesome and the service director went to bat for us in getting Ford to buy the vehicle back. Of all the fords ive owned, the problems with this one vehicle have been the exception. Never checked, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it had a build date of 4/20.

2017 Explorer Platinum - running like a top. As mentioned before, Sync 3 is soooo much better than the Ford MyTouch.

Bang for your buck, the Platinum is the way to go.

Has PLENTY of room for a mid size SUV.

Drop another $1K on the Livernois tune, intake, 3 bar MAP, and thermostat and call it a day.

Wife couldn’t be happier.

I just to talk her into getting these wheels:

I have not owned a Cayenne, but I considered helping my wife get one before she settled on a Wrangler, and then an F150 when the Wrangler got demolished to hell and back last year (not her fault). The reliability is hit/miss, which can be said for many vehicles on the road. However, when something does happen, you're going to pay out the butt for it.

2nd hand anecdotal story:
Asked a friend of mine if he had any experience with them. He told me that a co-worker of his had one and absolutely hated the thing- couldn't get rid of it because of how upside down the loan was. He said the thing was constantly having cooling system issues and electrical issues. Granted this was a 1st gen. Can't speak for 2nd gen.

Thanks for all the input. It’s sounding like a hard no for the Porsche. I kinda figured as much, but I thought I’d ask anyway. I have owned an Explorer before, about 15 years ago. It had some big problems under warranty and then it ran decent for quite a stretch. I sold it for dirt cheap to my younger brother many years ago and he ran it into the ground. It had around 347,000 miles on it when he sold it to some farmers.

Thanks again for all the recommendations! I’ll keep on looking. There’s no real timetable on this next family mobile. I’ll take a look at the new Explorer platinum edition. I did check out the F150 platinum and I was impressed. So maybe the Explorer is worth a look with all the positive things said here.

Oh and to the comment on checking out the Japanese brands, I’m pretty sure the wife’s next ride will be a RX350. Hard to beat the reliability of Lexus. I also have been taking a long look at the Tundra for it’s ENORMOUS back seat for the kids and I can appreciate the back to baskics approach to reliability. All that said, if I didn’t have kids, I’d find a way to swing a GT350. Kids have a way of changing those kinda plans! ;)

We had a diesel 2011 Touareg till VW bought it back. It’s essentially the same car as a Cayenne. It was reliable. Fits and finish is better than the equivalent Explorer, etc. Fuel mileage was 30mpg highway. Wife loved it. I loved it. The torque was fun and the chassis was athletic. After the buyback, the wife wanted another, but wanted a 3rd row. We bought a Q7, which is just an extended wheel base Cayenne/Touareg.

40 freaking thousand for a used vehicle out or warranty or almost out. Sounds to me like you are keeping up with the Jones. You can get a nice new suv or very close to new to the same price or less with a 5 year warranty and it should be cheaper to fix and maintain.

NO.

Mom bought a Cayenne in 2004. V8 but non turbo model. It was decent and never caused any issues in 55k of use. She griped all the time that tires were too expensive but other than that was relatively easy on the maintenance.

I will say though that right out of warranty she went to an independent shop for the basics(oil, tires...etc) and it was worlds cheaper than the dealer.

After getting rid of it she went to a Jaguar XJ and then back into a Porsche. She now drives a Macan and loves it.

On another note, my wife drives an Edge Sport(basically the new Edge ST)and its a beast. A few hiccups here or there - one was bought back due to body mold and the one now had motor replaced under warranty. Other that those two issues it has been a great truck. All options with the 21" wheels in Tuxedo black and it just looks angry. Ford nailed it with the looks and the 2.7L engine. Tune only and it flat scoots. Shockingly quick off the line and has a stupid amount of mid range pull. You might be able to find a 2015-2016 Edge Sport under your budget. Grab an Unleashed or Livernois tune and enjoy.

My old man bought a Porsche Cayenne when I was in high school. He bought it used (1 owner) from the Porsche dealership in town. He owned that thing for 6-7 years before he sold it. We drove it from Illinois to Washington D.C. and back on a vacation, he drove it from Illinois to Idaho and back for a vacation. Tons of miles on it. He loved it. Very comfortable SUV that was also quick.

But, you pay for the Porsche name. He always visited the Porsche dealership for maintenance to maintain warranty. Oil changes weren't cheap and I remember him talking about the brakes being crazy expensive. If you were to ask him about maintenance today, he'd tell you while it wasn't cheap, he really enjoyed the dealership's in-house barista that would make coffee and fresh baked chocolate chip cookies.

When I was home on leave from the Air Force, he would let me use it to skip costs of a rental car. I loved driving it. At the end of the day, you're getting into a Porsche. That's what you're paying for.

We own a 2012 S. Wife bought it used in 2015. It has never been in the shop for anything, other than oil changes. She loves it. Her BMW convertible on the other hand...………….is another story.

Seriously? One bought back as a lemon due to mold and the second blew an engine yet you still rate it as "great?"
