I am pretty sure what you are seeing is him carrying something in his hand.. Tomatoes actually which is a treat they give him.
They arent very large down there fyi so you would probably need a front shot to even see that.
Anywho he apparently walks upright more frequently then other gorillas when he is carrying snacks, but more so because he does not like to get his hands dirty, specially when there is mud
