So last year I was running 295/30/18 Toyo R888's on all 4 corners, and aside from the weird handling characteristics of having such wide tires up front, I didn't have any issues hooking up my ~620RWHP TVS anywhere in 2nd gear for the first 800 miles or so, as long as the temp outside was around 60 or higher. First gear would spin a bit but I'd still actually get some decent traction halfway through the rev range, especially if it was warmer out.
This year, I decided to switch it up for a more drag focused setup, and am running some 265 Potenza S04's up front, and I went with 285/40/18 Nitto NT05Rs in the rear. I did heat cycle the tires and remove them from the car after their first use, and have put a few hundred miles on them so far... but I can't get them to hook in any conditions at all. No matter what, these are spinning all the way through 2nd and also quite a bit in 3rd... in fact my old R888s had better traction with 1800 miles on them, minimal tread left, and no sidewall in comparison. And 1st gear is completely useless....
What gives? Is the only way to heat these up a 30-second burnout, or should I try running a lower PSI on them (it's at 24 currently)? I'm just kind of dissapointed that these new tires have worse traction than R-compounds which are more cornering focused than drag/straight-line acceleration focused... anyone else have any experience with the NT05Rs?
