Im new to the cobras, Ive had a couple other fast cars(a GT and a z-28) but my cobra feels very week below 4k RPM. It pulls hard above 4k, but my old GT feels faster than this thing below 4k RPM. it feels like it almost bogs untill you reach 4k and then it takes off. I dont understand. Is this normal. Ive heard a few people talking about putting gears in it would help. I drive my car alot on the interstate and I dont want to kill my gas milage with gears, so what do you guys recommend. Thanks, Holly

yep

Sounds like my test drive the day I bought mine. :D

Gears should have been my first mod. I regret never getting them.
When I got a custom email tune via my Predator it definately helped. My catback really seemed to increase throttle response too but these cars really shine with gears 4.10 for a daily driver or 4.30 for a weekend toy.

Congrats on the purchase you will enjoy it, you just need to dump some more money into it.

Oh and gears will HELP your gas milage if anything. You won't need to use as much throttle to get moving or to speed up. Do some searches...plenty of proof in past posts.

Sounds right. Congrats on the new toy. 4.10's are a must. Makes all the difference in the world. Do a search on gears and you will see that you have no need to fear the gear.

Most here will recommend 4.10, 4.30 or 4.56 Think of this motor as a 5.0 but with 1000 extra rpm to play with. Shifting is done at higher RPM power is higher also. Havent heard of many if any who have lost mileage going to 4.10, some have increased it. Whay RPM are you shifting at in normal driving? Dont think of this as a 5.0 when it comes to shift points, rpm wont hurt these motors as long as they have a decent oil level.

With a gear calculator, the RPM is still plenty low at 75 even with 4.10 or 4.30 gears. Search "gears" just on this forum you will find a ton of info, as well as find gears arent cheap to do with the IRS

Good luck and welcome

I went from a 00 GT to my 01 Cobra, the GT did feel quicker on take off, however, once the Cobra gets above 3k RPM it moves. Like everyone is saying you need gears, I done a lot of research before I made my decision and went with 4.30's. On the Hwy if you lock it on cruise I don't see why your gas mileage would be to bad. I play to much with mine on the Autobahn is the only reason I don't get decent gas mileage

I had 4.10's then went to 4.56's. Nothing is different except I have a bigger smile on my face when I hit the loud pedal.

would 3.73s be enough gear? I dont want to gear it too much and be turning
over 3k RPM at 70mph

I ended up going that route with 3:73's only because I didn't want higher RPMs at highway speeds. For me - it was an excellent choice because with my mods, it's like having 4:10's without the high RPMs.

And welcome.

3.73s will make you wish you had 4.30s

In deep thought, I wonder how my Cobra would react to 4:30s with my current mods. It seems the upgrade in the flywheel and drive shaft made quite a difference. <ponders running quarter mile in 12s> :dw:

With a 4.30 you'll be at 2679 rpm at 70mph
With a 4.10 you'll be at 2554 rpm at 70mph

In my opinion it's a waste of money to go from 3.27s to 3.73s as the performance gain will be minimal.

Cars routinley get over 20mpg hwy with 4.30s

Don't Fear the Gear!

i was running solid 12's (12.7-12.8, estimated from 8.1x 1/8 mile ET's) with stock gears...
