Driving my 9th grader to school this AM in my GT500, this dumb lady literally pulls out 100' in front of me (probably closer to 60-70' after further thought, but I don't know for sure), trying to cross 4 lanes of traffic. I was going near the speed limit (~35mph) and had to use every bit of reflexes, judgement, etc to avoid her. I slammed on the brakes, had to veer left, and when she came to a stop (not sure how I got on the horn, but that is all that alerted her to the impending doom that was about to be a horrific accident...I would have slammed into her driver's side t-bone style), we were both less than a foot from each other. She was literally still perpendicular in the road, as all she did was slam on the brakes at the last second...doing nothing else to avoid the collision.

It was all driver and the fact I was in one of my hi-po, hot-rods. So the silly greenies can bark, complain, and gripe about our gas-guzzlers. The fact is due to hi-po brakes, suspension, and tires, I just saved the taxpayers in my city some serious coin... from insurance rates, to EMTs who would have been called to the scene, to the police dept that would have spent better of 1 hr directing traffic, to city workers who would have had to clean up the mess.

This car just cost the planet less than if I was driving some silly hybrid.

So take that you stinkin' liberal leftist tree-huggers!!!

Great story! Good to hear you and the kid escaped unharmed.

Just goes to show how important situational awareness even in low speed situations.

You're exactly right, and it turned into a great teaching moment for my son who will be driving soon. I could see the lady wasn't looking, and I have always driven extremely defensively, but if I'd been in a lesser vehicle, no matter what I could have done would have helped much.

This was truly one of those moments where due to sheer distance and lack of time to react, it took more than just awareness and adept reactions to avoid a bad accident.

Thats a great story! Was she on the phone, or simply not paying attention?

The lady was not paying attention.

To the other poster... why "lame"? Would it be a more exciting story if I'd plowed into the lady? Lame b/c I was going the speed limit? Or lame b/c of my political views towards the socialist left that would rather me trade my hot-rod for an econocar?

Same thing happened to me in my old Z. It was the Z that bailed me out of T-Boning a car awhile back except i was running near 60ish. If i had been in any other car i really feel like id been pilled up. Of course if i was in my SuperDuty the driver of the car may have not lived. Jus the grace of God i guess.

Yep... that's the true bottom line.

Obviously, my political rhetoric is a little exaggerated, guys... just trying to poke a little fun and make a point out of a very close call... closest I've had in my 25yrs of driving. I've been fortunate to have never been in an accident... I'm sure it will happen at some point, but am just glad it wasn't today.

So Cal
op, you've got one serious stable there :beer:

on the flipside, i always thing about, what if i have to slam on my brakes because of some moron in front of me, but the car behind me has crappy brakes and cant stop as quickly as i can :kaboom: although then it wouldnt be my fault :dancenana:

i just saw a similar scenario to the OP's story just yesterday. lady almost caused an accident when she pulled out into traffic, cutting people off. i looked at her and what do you know? she was on the phone yapping away :bored:
not even hands free either

Same exact thing happened to me and my wife 3 weeks ago. We were in her truck though. I bought her an 08 ford f250 fx4 8 inch lift. 40 inch swamper tires, and i had just recieved the vehicle from the offroad shop where I had the front bumper replaced with a steel cattleguard/ winch package. Unfortunatly for the girl driving the focus that pulled out infront of my wife and I: Not paying attention cost her her life. We were going 40 ( the speed limit)and there was less then 50 feet.

We just got the truck back monday and my wife is scared to drive and has been really emotional ever since. I keep telling her it wasnt her fault, but shes having a hard time with it. I had my seatbelt on, but im a big guy and my knee hit the dashboard so i had to have surgery. So I havnt been able to drive my shelby in like almost 4 weeks.

damon84, that is a horrific accident, and I don't blame your wife at all for what she's going through (and I know you don't either). I know if I was in my wife's Yukon or my 4-dr Ram pickup, we'd have been calling 9-1-1. I also know if I was in a lesser car from a performance standpoint, there would have been damage.

I had a few things like this happen to me when I was in my C6 corvette. I am conviced that if I had been in anyother normal car than a highperformance sports car, there would have been NO way I could have stopped and avoided the accident at hand. I agree. If you had to pull that same stop and avoid in a ferrari, you'd be even better off. Same with motorcycles, I did the same on a few of my old crotch rockets. If it had been a harley, I would have been a dead man.
