IF the dial on the ac control was hard to move, then I would check into whether it actually is moving from the full hot position. Does the car push hotter air once it is warmed up out of the vents like the heat is stuck on?
Anyone remember if the temp dial is cable or vac controlled? Thought it was a cable but not so sure. If the mixing door is fubared, the area with the condenser inside may not be opening to allow air around it to make the air cool.
I dont know enough about the air flow through the heater core and the ac core to tell you how to diagnose problems with the mixer or controls, but if the AC compressor is running fine then I would assume that some of the controls are bad.
BTW, does the line going to the firewall get cold like it should. Most will get frost on them as they operate. Easy way to tell if the whole system is working. That is happening then the problem is def. with the mixer.
