One reason I refuse to shop @ Wal-Mart. i would much rather support my local economy than send more dough to Bentonville, which will in turn be sent to china. I try to buy local if I can but it's just getting so hard now a days.

A lot of packages have, "Built in Mexico with USA components", or "Built in China with USA components."

I was bored during my shopping spree yesterday and decided to look at different items throught the stores I went to for the "made in the USA" label and couldnt find any. I did find a couple of Mexico, Taiwan, India and some other wierd locals. Most of the stuff was made in china (shock) and to be fair to the story, I did go to walmart, toys r us and the local mall just to name a few. Point is, I can't remember the last time I saw a made in the USA label on anything except an edelbrock intake a buddy of mine bought last year. Please tell me there are at least a few items still made in America that aren't cars or food items. Pics would be cool if you had them.

Makes you wonder what would happen if china decided to not export anything to the USA.

Alot of your higher end audio equipment is made in the USA.....My home audio components (ADCOM) is made in the USA, as well as My JL Audio Amp and subs for my car...

here's a big captain obvious answer to this...

...since the US can't produce the same underpaid labor as other countries, almost everything is China, Taiwan or Japan. That...is where the US products have gone.

also as mentioned...many high end items that you pay real money for are still made in america. Their longevity isn't always a strong suit, but their general quality always seems much better :)

true. JBL/Infinity/Harmon Kardon is based right here in Van Nuys, CA.

but yeah, most stuff is made in china or mexico now. id rather support made in mexico than china but of course, with most things, you cant really even choose

we spoke with a rep from Gearwrench at SEMA. the company that owns them also owns Craftsman, Cobalt, Snap On and a few other tool companies. he said basically all the brands are the same except the more specialized brands like Snap On have more specialized tools. and, he said that Craftsman is inferior to their European tools because the Craftsman plant hasnt been update like the Euro plant has (cant recall the brand line name). he said they only keep Craftsman alive so they can say theyre "made in America". eh, either way, still good tools and keeping some Americans gainfully employed

LOTS of the hipo aftermarket parts are designed and built in the USA.

and one thing no other country will likely ever be able to take away from us is our reign in the entertainment industry. music, movies etc.... England is probably the next closest to us and they dont even compare. with electronic music gaining worldwide popularity, musicians are springing up in nations all over the globe but as far as singers/bands etc... we still have it

I mostly never look except I don't want my electronics made in China, because from experience I can say quality is poop. I would not pay extra for a product made in US because that to me is socialism, I will not subsidies someone else by choice, whether through their job or any other means. The US overall has a huge job market and if you are in a field that doesn't provide jobs then switch careers, I finished school and became an engineer while my father who was an engineer in Ukraine became a cab driver because he couldn't find a job but he needed to put food on the table.

I've been wondering how important Made In America is to the younger people (I'm 43) and if it meant anything. Perhaps they have not bought enough of a Chinese made item to say that they want one that will last 10 or 15 years instead of 1 or 2?

I machine my items right here in Ohio. Because I am not a paying vendor, yet, I am not going to promote my company. I am VERY proud to be able to say that my products are American made on my site though.

Tuff Stuff Performance Accessories (not my company) are also built in Ohio.

The typical wage in China today is 67 cents (US) and hour. How, as an American, can you compete with that? It is not a matter of "subsidizing" an American worker when you buy an American product, as someone mentioned, rather it is a standard of living within a given economy. How much should we be paying our Engineers? $1.00 an hour? Would you work for that so that someone else would not have to "subsidize" you when they buy the product you work with? Even if that person is just your employer, should he subsidize you when he can have a Chinese Engineer do your job for far less? Do you see how this sounds?

In China their metallurgy is not the same as our's. When you purchase a specific metal the composition is not exactly the same as that metal made in the US. This causes an inferior product.

Many Chinese have a mindset that I refer to as "Now you have one". When the American company contracts a Chinese company to manufacture their goods the Chinese company, if not restricted, will take license to cut costs on your product to boost their own profits. When you receive your product it is a piece of crap. When you complain they say "But now you have one. You didn't have any before, we made them for you, and now you have one." But it's a piece of crap. This does not concern the Chinese people in this example, they have provided you with something that you didn't have before, what is the problem? The concept of "quality" is non-existant to these people, as used in this example. Ask Mattel.

I have a portable CD player (always used stationary), made by Sony in Japan, from 1986. It works as good today as it did 21 years ago. Anybody else have a portable CD player that they've had for even 10 years and works like new?

I buy American made when I can. I am 43 and have had enough experiences to learn that I cannot afford to buy cheap. What that means is rather than buy 3 of something because I keep having to replace it, I would rather pay twice, or three times as much and get the American one that will outlast all 3 of the Chinese made crap. This saves me anguish and in the long run, usually, money.

I went to buy a die grinder from Sears-Mart because I wanted a good, American made Craftsman die grinder for home use. The one I looked at on display had a defective trigger guard to protect you from accidently starting the tool. I look at the trigger and it has "Taiwan" on it. This Taiwan made piece of crap was still priced at $76. Unable to find an American made die grinder at a retail store I bought a Chinese made one from Harbor Freight, on sale for $10. If I have to buy a piece of crap I will pay a piece of crap price.

I was also looking at impact guns. Craftsman guns were made in China. I looked at the old, trusted name of Ingersol-Rand. Yup, you bet, made in China. IR actually makes the impacts for Craftsman as well, I learned. So now I am searching ebay, garage sales, and craigslist for an older, American made impact gun.

I'm fed up with experiences of Chinese crap not lasting. Now I buy the American one for twice the price, and 5 times the quality or longevity. Unfortunately, many of the younger folk have grown up with the "throw-a-way" mentality......if it breaks just get another one, they're cheap."

Yeah, they're cheap alright.

Go talk to your local union that demands $20 an hour for work a monkey could do. They'll let you know why everything is made in China.

we would adapt. it might be hard, for like a month.

worst thing China could do is cut its export ties with the US. they would lose their entire economy, and we would see a revolution in workmanship not seen since WWII. we would become even stronger, we would have to stop relying on outside sources and start relying on ourselves and our resources made right here in the USA.

$20 an hour is chump change these days. Unions get blamned but they are the only reason you will ever see "Made in the USA" these days. Why would they be paying these Monkeys even minimum wage when they can get the work done off shore for 50 cents an hour? It comes done to shareholders before employees. Henry Ford believed he had to pay his employees enough that they could afford his product. How many could afford a new F150 at your monkey minimum wage? None.

Now get back to your Walmart shopping and in 10 years wonder where are the good jobs have gone.

Ignorance is bliss, stop blaming the labor unions. The facts are that these greedy corporations can use cheap labor in these COMMUNIST countries and keep the regimes fat and happy with money while they exploit the working people of those countries and pollute without impunity.
